... Greenspan even reminisced about his days in the inner circle of novelist and philosopher Ayn Rand, his intellectual mentor. He said Rand, the libertarian thinker and author of "The Fountainhead" and "Atlas Shrugged," had a profound impact on him.
Greenspan's free-market thinking was shaped by his friendship with Rand, whom he met in the 1940s. She advocated minimalist government intervention in the economy, hard money and fiscal restraint.
Rand had pulled him apart analytically in a way that no one had done since, Greenspan told the class. It got to the point where he argued to Rand that he did not exist, he said.
"It kept me interested for 30 years," Greenspan said.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Armed with fake IDs, undercover congressional investigators sailed through mandatory background checks and bought guns from licensed dealers in five states, lawmakers were told Wednesday. ...
Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., who sought the undercover investigation, said the findings point to a problem with laws meant to prevent criminals from purchasing weapons.
"The name (on the ID) could be Bugs Bunny and as long as there's no criminal record on file the gun can be sold," said Waxman, the top Democrat on the House Government Reform Committee. ...
The National Rifle Association, normally at odds with Democrats who favor gun control, agreed that ID checks are a problem.
"Unless you know the person standing in front of you is who they purport to be then background checks are worthless," said Jim Baker, the NRA's chief lobbyist.
Baker said the NRA was supportive of better screening for drivers licenses and other state-issued IDs that are used for gun purchases, but not of additional screening for gun purchasers alone. ...

The Los Angeles City Council appears certain to pass measures that would restrict sales of small handguns and require gun buyers to provide thumbprints before they could even purchase a firearm.
The council gave initial approval to an ordinance Wednesday that would prohibit gun shops from selling any firearm that measures less than 6.75 inches in length and 4.5 inches in height. ...
