[...] [James] Hahn, 50, won election Tuesday as the new mayor in the nation's second-largest city. He received 53 percent of the vote in the runoff race to 46 percent for former state Assembly Speaker Antonio Villaraigosa, also a Democrat. [...] After running a campaign some considered racially tinged in a city with a history of racial unrest, Hahn also spoke Tuesday night of the need to unite Los Angeles. "I'm committed to keeping the city of L.A. together and the only way we can do that is by earning the trust of every part of this city," he said. One of Hahn's first tasks as mayor will be to quell a secession threat from the city's San Fernando Valley, even as the city undergoes a dramatic demographic transformation. Source:

AH, THE WEAVER/WACO GAMBIT! DENVER (Reuters) - Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh, who dodged one date with death after FBI officials admitted they failed to turn over evidence at his trial, may learn on Wednesday if he can win a second stay of execution from a federal judge. McVeigh, 33, who is scheduled to die on Monday for planting the bomb that killed 168 people at the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in 1995, wants his execution stayed a second time so that his lawyers can thoroughly investigate some 4,000 pages of evidence withheld by the government. [...] Prosecutors wrote in their opposition papers that most of the 4,000 pages of evidence were immaterial to McVeigh's conviction and death sentence and argued that he deserves to die for his crimes, regardless of the FBI's mistakes.
