SANDY, Utah (Reuters) - Two dozen gun-carrying Republicans surrendered their loaded weapons on Saturday, complying with a security requirement so they could enter an arena where U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites) was speaking.

"These are people who just want to defend themselves," Janalee Tobias, a member of Women Against Gun Control, told Reuters as 24 people with permits to carry concealed weapons surrendered 25 loaded guns.

The guns were stored in lockers outside the arena where Cheney addressed the Utah Republican Party state convention in Sandy, just south of Salt Lake City.
