The Leash Is Off
Part Two: COINTELPRO in Cyberspace
by Jeff Elkins
I've been amazed at the somewhat bland reaction to Ashcroft's new
guidelines from some organizations that should surely know better. The
'Well, that's not so bad' reaction from Cato was shocking. The Cato
scholars certainly know the history of COINTELPRO operations by the
FBI from the 1950s through the early 1970s. In order to fully grasp
what our Attorney General has unleashed, you should too. Especially
important today, are the expansion of COINTELPRO tactics into
cyberspace.

CIPA and the Freedom of the Press
by James G. Maynard
In 2000, President Clinton signed the Children's Internet Protection
Act, which threatened to cut off Federal dollars for libraries and
schools which had not installed internet filters by July 1st to
prevent the viewing of adult material at these facilities. On Friday,
May 31 of this year, the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in
Philadelphia struck down the law as unconstitutional.

The Death Penalty, Revisited
by Patrick Martin
When I started writing for TLE, I made a decision that I would not
attempt to answer my critics directly. I realized that to do so would
eventually cause me to expend so much time and effort that I would end
up doing nothing else. However, I have decided to make an exception.

Bush's Assault on the Second Amendment
by Doug Newman
I have just finished reading Vin Suprynowicz's superlative book Send
in the Waco Killers, as well as his Memorial Day column. I want to
tie together these two works, the above quote from Solzhenitsyn, and
the Bush Administration's recent announcement that commercial air
pilots not be allowed to have firearms in the cockpit.

This Father's Day Send Justice
by Wendy McElroy
When the National Organization for Women holds its annual conference
in St. Paul, Minnesota on June 21st, the voices silenced by NOW will be across the street,
calling for gender justice. The rally will include father's whose
rights have been ignored or maligned by NOW. It will include women who
refuse to tolerate anti-male bias in the family court system.

Why I Hate Gunnies

There are topics I despise more than the Second Amendment, however I
cant think of them at this time. Now before you go all ballistic over
thinking I am liberal or some such nonsense let me explain.

A Brief Legislative Review
by Michael W. Gallagher
Prior to the destruction of the World Trade Center, the current
administration, in the person of Attorney General John Ashcroft, tried
to pass a number of repressive, and unconstitutional enactments as a
part of the "war on crime" and the "war on drugs". They were generally
given little chance of passage.

FBI Guidelines Reveal Ulterior Motive
by Mark Lamoree
Statements about the new FBI guidelines have been in no short supply
since their announcement. What I have not heard are many questions-
specifically, "What does the FBI hope to accomplish by monitoring
church and political meetings and Internet usage?" The media and most
commentators seem to take it for granted that the FBI's aim is to
combat terrorism. The problem here is that the privileges arrogated by
the FBI are not consistent with their stated goals.

Who Knew?
by David M. Brown
We have another revelation now about the state of governmental
knowledge or maybe-knowledge of impending terrorist attacks prior to
September 11.
According to a Knight-Ridder report, the National Security Agency
(NSA) supposedly listened in to "telephone conversations before
September 11 between the suspected commander of the World Trade Center
and Pentagon attacks and the alleged chief hijacker, but did not share
the information with other intelligence agencies, U.S. officials said
Thursday.

Jackbooted Thug of the Month for June 2002:
US Attorney General John Ashcroft
by Carl Bussjaeger
Mr. Ashcroft won his position at the top of this month's JBT list
through his diligent and ceaseless efforts to stifle freedom across
America, and to make the people of America pay for the dubious
privilege of being enslaved.
