THE LIBERTARIAN ENTERPRISE
Number 281, July 25, 2004

"Was ... this ... really ... necessary?"

EDITORIAL MATTERS:

SURPRISE!

Okay, so it's not much. But, it's all we got. Yes, this, the 281st issue of TLE, brings us to our new URL. ncc-1776.org—The Libertarian Enterprise. Got to be better than that nasty old Socialism Forever Enterprise, right? We think so.

It wasn't easy, and it's still not done. Since we were moving to a new server and all, I figured why not redesign the file structure to make things more better. So I did. And things are more better, alright, but there's a lot of minor fiddling to do. Fortunately there are programs that can do mass-change. And while ncc-1776.org doesn't yet have all of the files up, that's on-going and will be finished Real Soon Now. And we have a feller helping set up the whole thing as database-driven. We'll see how that goes!

For now, we'll keep using the old e-mail addresses, since the new ones I set-up don't work! And I can't figure out how to fix them, so far. All in time, I'm sure. Probably. You bet. Nothing can go wrong ... wrong ... wrong ... wrong ....

It Can Happen Here
by Jonathan David Morris
Late last year, General Tommy Franks told Cigar Aficionado that another terrorist attack on America, especially one using WMDs, could "unravel the fabric of our Constitution" in favor of martial law. In this scenario, liberty would be traded for security at the request of regular Americans—folks with 9-to-5 jobs and families to protect.

Getting the Message Out
by Robert F. Hawes Jr.
With all of the political in-fighting and disaffection that we see in American politics today, it would seem that the liberty agenda should be receiving more attention as a potential alternative to the one-size-fits-all rhetoric of the major parties. Yet we hear next to nothing about it, a fact which seems incredible when you first consider it.

Dr. Octopus and the Morality of the State
by Lex Concord
Critics and movie-goers alike have lauded Spider-Man 2 as a great superhero movie. Spidey's physical battles with Dr. Octopus provide the action, while Peter Parker's moral battles with the personal burden of being a hero provide the drama. Throw in Mary Jane Watson as the love interest and maniacal boss J. Jonah Jameson for comic relief, and you've got a movie that's worth the price of admission and the markup on the popcorn as well. The villainous Dr. Octopus provides a lesson on the morality of the state for free.

Government Policy: Fear, Hatred, Bigotry, Oppression, Deceit
by Ron Beatty
As we begin the final run-up to the conventions and election day, I thought it might be interesting to note what our government policy is becoming or has become over the last three years.

This past week, I had surgery. Although the surgery itself went smoothly and my recovery is proceeding apace (thanks for asking!), events leading up to the actual operation weren't nearly so easily managed.

No Panic Over School Child Abuse
by Wendy McElroy
A report claiming that close to 10 percent of children in public schools—more than 4.5 million—endure sexual abuse or misconduct by school employees has recently touched off a media-fueled panic.
