This Week for the University Association
Special to L. Neil Smith's The Libertarian Enterprise This essay is meant to be a periodical update for the University Association of the Individual Sovereign University. If you have interest in a particular case or situation we are helping with, please let us know. Our friend in Dalton, Georgia, Terri Trippe, has moved to be with family in Canton, Georgia. I regard this development as very possible. Terri has agreed to become a membership recruiter for the university association, and I'm preparing a "care" package for her to include some tri-fold brochures, copies of my "State Busting" essay, and some thoughtful suggestions from our leading sales team expert, Shaun Lee. Terri's package was delayed a bit due to a minor snag here, but will be ready by the end of this week to go to her. Earlier this month we found a volunteer to send a $20 money order to pay Terri's probation expense, something that, in the event that her efforts to find work don't get any further than should be expected with tens of millions of Americans out of work, may be needed in September, as well. Terri has been drug free for six years, is complying with the terms of her probation, and would like help with a hardship plea to ask the court to reduce her $3,000 remaining probation costs. Our friend in Cumming, Georgia, Lafaye Glenn is having court again, tomorrow (31 August 2011). She keeps trying to get a ride scheduled with the bus service for disabled persons, and they always cancel on her. Presumably because they want to see her fail to appear and lose her bond. The government in many places is exceedingly corrupt. She learned at her court appearance that her public pretender refuses to do any work for her, has failed to subpoena any witnesses on her behalf, and is engaged in a process of malpractice in order to deny her the rights of the accused under the constitutions of Georgia and the United States. Our friend Dawn Eckel's son was left on personal recognizance bond after his public pretender actually fought against the prosecution's attempt to have him under supervised house arrest. A good result was obtained, since Darryl has met all the court's demands, made all his court appearances, and so forth. Our friend Bernard von NotHaus had an interesting "wrinkle" in his case this month when federal persecutors announced that they may seek to seize any Liberty Dollar silver pieces being displayed anywhere in the world at any time for no apparent reason. Schaeffer Cox continues to seek justice in his case in Alaska. Our friend Voluntaryist Lovah Freeman asks for help: "I think it would be good to cover the current news breaks about the FBI infiltration and the acquittal of Schaeffer Cox on the "harboring a fugitive" charges. Does anyone know how to get copies of the court documents from his and the others who were arrested?" My research found an article about the charges being dismissed against Rachel Barney, wife of accused Coleman Barney. See my note on Schaeffer's case for details. Lori Remp continues to seek help with her situation, getting herself and daughters into a better situation. She has furniture for sale, is working to find modelling work for herself and her eldest daughter, and was the beneficiary of a recent ChipIn organised by our mutual aid team. John Bush and Stephen Scheftall were able to return all the way home to Austin vicinity after our efforts last week to get them and their merchandise to the Tenth Amendment Centre's "Nullify Now" event and back to their vehicle, which we were able to help get out of impound in Muskogee, Oklahoma. I gather they plan further activism in seeking justice in their case. We were contacted this week by Kris Bailey about his efforts to run an "electric cab" in the Austin vicinity. Apparently there are police charges stemming from some sort of conflict with the city over licences for running a cab service. Shaun Lee is continuing to pursue justice in her case from January, while working very actively with the university association as one of our membership recruiters. Shaun has also been instrumental in resolving several cases where help was needed, including her efforts in delivering John and Stephen back to Muskogee. Roberta Byrne Simonsen continues to be ill and is facing utility payment difficulties. Roberta is working with us to create a mutual aid response team in Utah. She is a single mother and home schooling her sons. Her rental arrangement requires that she keeps the utilities paid. Roberta has offered a number of her personal property items for sale, including some lovely silver-plated goblets and items of rare watch manufacture. Last week, I met Chris Lempa for supper. We had an excellent talk about the work he does in Lawrence, Kansas offering a safe place for children after school. The project is needing new sources of funding. We think the project may be a model for other community centres. A group of us met on the Plaza in Kansas City on Friday evening. We were there looking for a repeat performance of the extreme and ugly police presence from the week before. It turns out that there were essentially no young people left to intimidate, so there were far fewer police. We met Matt Tomasic near the Seville Light and spoke with him at length. His story is covered in a number of local publications, and has inspired us to visit him again at the community centre on the West side in coming days. We are currently awaiting an update from John Delano on his story. I gather from our contacts that he has been falsely charged with "disrupting traffic" by a notorious liar on the Chicago police force. We learned this week that Panera Bread has apparently created a mutual aid service for employees. Hat tip Matt Harris. We have a silent "chip in" organised by Loring Smith for Anthony Montana. Anthony is a truck driver who is slightly in arrears on child support in Florida (about $460) and also needs $200 to get his commercial driver licence back. Anthony has offered an extensive collection of Beatles memorabilia for sale, and a very finely carved antique desk for sale, to attempt to raise funds for his obligations to court. He's also looking for work in trucking. Our friend Pete Wilson has posted extensively about e-mail encryption using public key cryptography. He's had some trouble with local law enforcement regarding his family's land. Our friend Shanna had difficulties with her car. We were able to get a volunteer to fund a tow to the garage she likes to work with. They were able to do some of the repairs. Further repair to her wheel bearing is needed. Shanna is an enthusiastic activist for the Midwest Liberty Project near Kansas City and also for the Mutual Aid Response Teams and Liberty Restoration Project. She is a single mother working at Wal-Mart to provide for her five year old daughter. Although I check the site somewhat frequently, I have not seen in many months any update on the case of Walt Anderson. We continue to discuss and think about our "defence against rape coalition" project. On the "Free Bradley Manning" project, we continue to plan the rally and vigil for Saturday 29 October 2011 in Leavenworth, Kansas, to be followed by a costume party at a hotel near KCI. We do not have a current update on Sandra Ami. We do not have a current update on Mary Lee Ward and her eviction pending in Bed-Stuy, New York. We do not have a current update on John Bush and his case in Austin regarding the "free speech zone" nonsense at the University of Texas during Obama's speech there some time ago. We have heard a rumour that Cat Bleish may be receiving a settlement regarding her case in Maplewood, Missouri. We don't have a current update on Tom Aker except to note that he survived the recent major storms in his area. I received a letter from prisoner Ian Freeman Bernard being held by Judge Arnold for some crazy charge relating to standing in front of a police car in Keene, NH. Ian seemed to be in good spirits. There have been a few other situations on the Mutual Aid Response Teams group that we've done our best to answer. If you feel your situation needs to be updated here, please feel free to let me know.
