Another Letter from L. Neil Smith

Re: "Hillary's Small Arms Treaty Swindle" by L. Neil Smith, "Letter from Laird Minor", and "Letter from Paul Konig"

It's very interesting that Laird and I came to essentially the same conclusion at the same time.

As it turns out, I tripped over another concurring opinion, on the day that this issue of TLE came out.

In a letter by Thomas Jefferson to Wilson C. Nicholas (September 7, 1803) "On the Constitutionality of the Louisiana Purchase" (in Thomas Jefferson, Letters and Addresses, Sun Dial Classics, 1908", reissued as an e-Book by Barnes and Noble , free if I remember right [ Right, also Amazon.com—Editor ]) he says:

"Our peculiar security is in the possession of a written Constitution. Let us not make it a blank paper by construction. I say the same as to the opinion of those who consider the grant of the treaty-making power as boundless. If it is, then we have no Constitution. If it has bounds, they can be no others than the definitions of the powers which that instrument gives. It specifies and delineates the operations permitted to the federal government, and gives all the powers necessary to carry these into execution. Whatever of these enumerated objects is proper for a law, Congress may make the law; whatever is proper to be executed by way of a treaty, the President and Senate may enter into the treaty; whatever is to be done by a judicial sentence, the judges may pass the sentence."

Not to rain on our own parade but:

Who says the good guys won? The recent failure of the United Nations to approve a treaty regulating the trade in small arms is being attributed to political pressure from the National Rifle Association and other American groups politically active in defending the right of American citizens and residents to keep and bear arms. The proposed treaty as written is indeed harmful to individual rights to to keep and bear arms and at the very minimum needs to have language added to assure the right of individuals to arm themselves for self defence and for recreational purposes (hunting, target shooting, collecting guns, etc.), and American pro-gun groups did indeed step up to protest the threat the proposed treaty to our right to keep and bear arms.

But if you think that this treaty was stopped by "the American Gun lobby" (or at least the one dedicated to protecting the RKBA of private citizens) you have been smoking a truly exotic mixture of hashish, crack, meth and just a hint of LSD, and in heroic quantities to boot. If you read the news reports on the failure of this pact and take the time to read between the lines China and Russia as well as the United States balked at passing the treaty. Check the numbers on who the big international dealers in small arms are and who is putting guns on the international black market for terrorists, revolutionaries, and criminal cartels and if these three nations aren't numbers one, two, and three they are in the top ten, more like top five.

The treaty discussions failed because the nation states making money off of the illicit gun trade didn't want to make their racket any more illegal than it already is. They laid off the responsibility for this on the NRA and American gun owners who value their rights over the fruition of the left's dreams of a socialist paradise. We didn't win, we got framed.

In the words of Edith Ann: and that's the truth.

Re: "Another Letter from Ann Morgan"

If we are going to talk about graphs and math, I can't let this one go by:

> Consider for instance the equation "X^2=9". Most people can't
> really mentally visualize that this makes a circle with a radius of
> 3. Draw it on a graph and they will.

I will happily give you that as the area of a square with an edge length of 3, but not the circle proposed.

A circle of radius 3 would have a diameter of pi*3^2, or an area of about 28.27 units. If instead you propose a circle with an area of 9, then the radius will be sqrt(9/pi), or about 1.69. Even the diameter is then about 3.39 units—not 3, however you slice it.

I'll readily agree with the substance of this letter, however.

Dear family and fiends (you know who you are),

My good friend Michael Badnarik is in Colorado helping with the Tisha Casida for Congress campaign. He is looking for a place to rent in the Eagle area where the campaign is basing itself.

If you have or know of any such facility, please contact Mike at (512) 461-0995.

Mike tells me they're going to be in the Craig area next Thursday or Friday, and that they may get down to Fort Collins that Saturday. Sounds to me like a chance to get together at Nordy's BBQ, the domain of another good friend and comrade. Russ Liberty.

If you're interested in something like that, please let me know by e-mail at [email protected].
