Drug Tests and Welfare

Special to L. Neil Smith's The Libertarian Enterprise

You see the posts everywhere. If I have to take a drug test for my job you should have to take one to collect welfare as if some how millions of welfare recipients would get cut off and all the employed folks would receive massive refunds. Ain't gonna happen!

The proposition would be far better phrased, "As I've given up my 4th amendment rights for my employer, you should too". The same concept ol Ben Franklin encountered when he wrote "those would give up their freedom in exchange for security deserve neither".

From now on whenever I observe this idiotic mantra I shall post the following:

Each time I read this I'm reminded of my many years working rock concerts where the marijuana smoke was so thick that a stage ten smog alert should have been declared. Think I could have passed a drug test? NO WAY!

Then there are the poppy seeds on bagels and bread that cause false reading for opiates.

There are several prescription drugs that will give the same reading.

In the spring the hills in my area are covered with a beautiful purple flower. It's called Belladonna or deadly night shade, Edgar Allan Poe's drug of choice. Seems like breathing the pollen from this plant might cause a false reading too.

...so before you blindly repeat the mantra of the radical right, give it a little thought.

Oh yea, then there's that pesky 4th amendment that prohibits searches without a warrant.

I'd hope that would apply to my blood stream as well as my urine and pockets.

Feel free to copy and share this.

Was that worth reading?
