New Study: Criminals Prefer Handguns, Not "Assault Weapons"

Thugs prefer handguns. Go figure.

According to a study published on June 16, 2014, most of the guns seized from gang members, felons and drug traffickers were handguns, not the automatic "assault weapons" often depicted in Hollywood crime stories. This is nothing new. For decades criminologists have told us this, and they note it is because petty street crime is best done with small weapons that can easily be hidden and disposed.

Now, the new edition of the Small Arms Survey confirms this long-standing trend. They analyzed 10,435 firearms seized by police. In Los Angeles, 92% of gang crime guns were handguns. And most—90%—were run-of-the-mill revolvers and pistols, like most American's keep in their night stand. Houston, Texas was on the other end of the range with 79% of gang guns being handguns, and 11% being rifles.

Nearly none were "spray the room" machines. During the 10 year study, Houston only recovered two such weapons, accounting for an underwhelming 0.3% of all the gang guns police recovered.

L.A. had none.

The Geneva-based research project's findings are a far cry from what Hollywood and D.C. (known as the Hollywood for Ugly People) broadcast. TV and movies love showing gang members and drug dealers mass murdering their enemies and innocents with automatic rifles, throwing lead like an army battalion. According to the Small Arms Survey, nothing could be further from the truth.

But wait! Hillary Clinton just decried the threat of "automatic weapons." Does that make her part of the ugly peoples' Hollywood, by painting completely inaccurate images of guns and crime? Or does it make the entertainment media part of her political campaign, which she already confesses is designed to "rein-in" your beliefs about owning a gun.

Sadly, it may be both.
