Re: Tom Kratman and "Clashing Civilisations" by Tyrone Johnson

It become obvious to me that none of you (except, possibly for Ken) has read Tom's work. That bit from Vox Populi was mild for him. He believes that ALL criminal acts cancel your breathing license. He also takes Starship Troopers to extremes. His series that begins with A Desert Called Peace follows the development of the Timocratic Republic of Balboa on the planet of Nova Terra. He is fond of crucifixion, impalement, and slow strangle hangings (the long drop being considered too merciful). Now, Tom and I have had long discussions on politics, and he's actually a nice guy. But he despises Libertarianism for it's "inherent inability to deal with the threats of today, from Islamic terrorist states to pandemics" die to a designed lack of strong government. His books are written to scare us into changing gradually while we still can, rather than forcefully, when it's too late.

It pains me to say it, but to an extent, I understand him. He fears that some terrorist asshole will get hold of weaponized anthrax and attack us, and even our current overly strong central government will not be able to be ruthless enough to stamp it out. I disagree with his definition of what would need to be done, and I do not believe a Libertarian society would have a problem dealing with it, but I understand his fears. And quite honestly, I'd rather live in the Balboa of his novels than what is coming next to the country I live in now. I fear for my children's future with the direction this country is going. my tinfoil hat is firmly affixed, my stockpile is growing, and it won't be enough.

Is Tom's idea a good one? Nope. Is it an understandable one? Yup. Does Tom see exactly where that idea would be taking us? Probably. Was this written to scare us into doing SOMETHING to prevent it's necessity? Almost guaranteed.
