Re: "Stupid Is As Stupid Does", by L. Neil Smith (this issue) I am reminded of one pf my favorite exchanges from the last season of Sons of Anarchy which I recently quoted in TLE. The gist is that books are more dangerous than guns. Thank you, Neil, for making the World more dangerous. A.X. Perez

Neil Schulman Neil Schulman's article in today's (10/4) issue, "Civil Obedience", touches on a subject that has long been a bugaboo of mine: the arrogating of the term 'First Responder' to themselves by minions and adjuncts of the State, at whatever level, and the sycophantic acceptance of that co-option by the mainstream media. Police, firefighters, and EMT/medics, however well-trained and—meaning they may be, are at best second responders to an incident. The true first responders to a situation are the ordinary citizens going about their daily lives who initially encounter an event in progress. The armed individuals who interrupt a robbery, assault, or mass shooting, the passersby who call emergency services and who may try to put out a fire with an extinguisher and/or evacuate residents from a burning building or who render CPR to a person experiencing a heart attack, these are who truly deserve the appellation. Persons selling five guns a year were being busted for selling without a license, but people selling five guns were having their licenses not renewed if they only sold five guns. While this Catch 22 situation was corrected, there is in fact a limit like the one you want to create already in place. Mr. President, any person writing in/reading this venue is opposed to all gun control. Perhaps you will be taken more seriously in your claims of trying to solve the problem of gun crimes without violating honest "gunnies" right if you demonstrated an actual knowledge of existing laws and regulations. Otherwise you come across as a demagogue making a big fuss about a need for gun laws that can only be satisfied by by violating gun owners' rights. A.X. Perez
