THE LIBERTARIAN ENTERPRISE Number 853, January 3, 2016 Believe me, to get what we want to make of society, libertarians must learn not to act like Republicans. Attribute to L. Neil Smith's The Libertarian Enterprise As mentioned elsewhere. If you vote, do not vote Democrat for anything this year. The Democratic candidates for President have stumbled all over themselves trying to establish who has the most rabidly anti-gun credentials in at least one debate. Therefor we must assume that confiscatory gun control laws are going to be part of the Democrats platform. Even your most pro-gun Congressman or state legislator may get cornered into backing anti gun laws he "doesn't believe in" as part of party discipline. (the only exception to this is to vote Democrat in the primaries to block Hillary Clinton from getting the nomination). Make sure that if you vote in the Republican primary elections you extract from the candidate you support a promise not to compromise on gun rights, not to trade magazine size restrictions for an extra ten billion dollars for defense, to give an example. As of the 1st of January 2016 it will be legal to carry handguns openly with a license in Texas. This is an improvement, but it is still licensing of a right that should not require licensing. It is also a baby step to Constitutional carry. This essentially means that Texan gun owners are going to have to show the legislature that chaos and old night will not descend on Texas. Irresponsible and reckless behavior by people going openly heeled in Texas must be revealed to be hoplophobic fantasy by our behavior. Respecting 3006 and 3007 signs is a good start. Make sure you know your local law enforcement agencies' and as much as possible individual officers' attitudes towards open carry. Some will be looking for trouble and it is important that we document the hell out of their inappropriate actions, especially if racism (including reverse racism) is involved. Others have indicated that they will not be checking carry licenses unless someone is acting in a manner that attracts their professional attention. Please don't attract their attention or give them other cause to regret their position. Of course carrying weapons, openly or concealed, is an absolute right and cannot properly be denied by the state. That said, a campaign is starting to make the second most populous state in the Union a Constitutional carry state. A little good manners and restraint goes a long way to accomplishing this. And to be honest, we are always claiming that "an armed society is a polite society." Time to show that "armed members of society are polite members of society." Vote the Party supporting gun control out of power. If you live in Texas show our legislators that Constitutional carry won't lead to the Gun Armageddon Norwegian slang implies. Gather the documentation that anything less than Constitutional carry is an invitation for some cops, especially racist cops, to abuse their power. We are in a war to make sure the law properly reflects the people's rights, and I'm honestly afraid that if we don't win it in 2016 and 2017 we will enjoy the benefit of neither law nor the enjoyment of rights.
