Skin Deep
Attribute to L. Neil Smith's The Libertarian Enterprise A while back, I wrote a piece about Gwyneth Paltrow (you probably know her as Pepper Potts from Ironman or as Viola de Loesseps in Shakespeare In Love—which she won the Academy Award for) lamenting the fact that such a lovely creature can make completely stupid remarks, politically and economically. To paraphrase Julie Brown, who wrote "Earth Girls Are Easy" and "The Homecoming Queen's Got A Gun", I forget now what she said, it was so stupid. The one and only reader-reaction I received was a brief message from some guy who opined that I must be blind because I think that Gwyneth Paltrow is lovely. It only goes to show you just how subjective these matters can be.
I am, as you may understand, first and foremost, a novelist, and, as a novelist, the phenomenon that seems to interest me more with every passing year is human (or even non-human) character. I have always believed that, sooner or later, an individual's true character will seep out onto their surface and mark them for what they truly are. This accounts for Hillary Clinton.
But I continue to be deeply puzzled by the apparent conflict between Presidential candidate Donald Trump and the television personality Megyn Kelly. I am by no means a Trump advocate—but I won't go into that right now. Megyn Kelly comes highly recommended. She's as beautiful and shapely as any movie star. She's intellectually gifted and academically accomplished. She calls herself a conservative (if she were a libertarian she'd probably be prettier) and she works for networks and other outfits that call themselves conservative, as well. So what goes on here? I do understand that Ms. Kelly has spent considerable time having radio sex with Howard Stern, which is indicative of bad taste, if nothing else. Vastly worse, and far more disgusting, since she started her feuding with the Donald, she has been seen and heard palling around and yucking it up with that festering boil on the ass of Western Civilization, Michael Moore. Bad taste doesn't even begin to touch a lapse of judgment and hygiene like that. As Yul Brynner famously said, "'Tis a puzzlement." Perhaps this is a matter, as my mother would say, of beauty being only skin deep. But I have a theory. Since, in her mid-40s (I was positively startled) any evil that may be inside Megyn doesn't seem to be seeping out onto her face, Hillarywise, and since her billionaire antagonist, is, I think, a fundamentally decent fellow—although he certainly has grievous faults—I believe the two are frenemies who secretly agreed at the beginning of the campaign to duke it out, increasing their publicity, and giving both Roger Ailes and Rupert Murdoch a pain where they sit down. In other words, they're performing a public service.

I don't really give the traditional portion of a rodent (well, not
much, anyway) what politics the female movie stars that I admire may
entertain, although that's why I deeply regret reading too much about
Scarlett Johanssen (who is a director's dream—incredibly dumb) and
have never inquired into the political beliefs of Mathilda May (she
gave us that 17-minute nude scene in Life Force), who may very well
be the most beautiful woman in the world. Or at least the most
generous.
