Re: January 19th, 2017: A Short Story by Giovanni Martelli

A marvelous story, Giovanni—I had a similar break with a friend from high school (sixty years ago, class of ’58) but without Dieter’s drama; I showed him a picture of Hillary on the cover of the American Rifleman magazine, and told him it was a Rull. We are in a war against the Rull of our own.

For those not familiar with the older SCiFi, The Rull are an alien inimical race invented by A. E. Van Vogt. They infiltrate humanity, and have complete control of the electromagnetic spectrum so that they can project an image of whoever they want to impersonate. Van Vogt wrote The War Against the Rull; my friend and I read it back in the day.

He has not returned my call.

Two can play this game.

I would expect, in a minarchist state, to see individuals or groups of individuals reacting to terrorist attacks.

Anything from challenging a rabble-rousing Imam in the street to a duel, to a privately funded higher tech massive retaliation for a WMD attack. Even dropping a rock ( or a tungsten telephone pole ) from orbit on the fuckers.

NAP is not a suicide pact. Small L libertarians can be just as nasty as anyone else when backed into a corner by violence.

You just can’t win with California or the Climate Change propaganda machine. Just when you thought it was going to dry up and blow away, Lake Tahoe is now on the brink of overflowing.

It you were around 20 or 30 years ago you’d know this is nothing new under the sun. California goes through these cycles of droughts and fires and periods of torrential rains, floods and mudslides on a regular basis. It’s no doubt linked to the short term cycles of warming and cooling. We now have a full Century of that and a!so the doomsday predictions that also swing with the same pendulum from sunbaked doom to the coming of the next ice age.

We’ve been there before.

Sunday Sermon

Two items:

With Independence Day coming up it is important to remind people of the Third Sentence (or phrase depending on your punctuation) of the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence:

“That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”

Statists like the first two sentences (or phrases), they kind if like to forget this third sentence. I suspect that, given their call for resistance, left wing statists will not be making that error for the next few years. Sadly, right wing statists, drunk on the power they are currently enjoying, do kinda, sorta, want to forget this phrase. For example it is mandatory in Texas and some other states to require that students memorize the First Two Sentences: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.—That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,“ during Freedom Week (2nd week of September during school year). Make sure the kids you are raising or helping raise (godchildren, students, etc.) learn all three sentences. They are the divinely inspired and revealed Word of God, in my not so humble opinion.

Speaking of children, about one eighth of the US population, some forty million people, have been born or immigrated into this country since 9/11. They have never known a country at peace, they have always been openly under scrutiny by the NSA (ya mean ya think we weren’t all being snooped before 9/11? You foolish. foolish naif.) They have always had to put up with TSA searches. If freedom is to survive and flourish in this country it must be taught to these guys and gals. They must be taught to value the virtues that lead to a love of liberty and require liberty to be practiced, teach them to delight the pleasures that come with liberty, both their own and that of others. Otherwise we will fail to do our share to “secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity” (different document).

Another Letter from Jeff Fullerton

Trident Maple Bonsai trees

The one on the left is for my bro.

The one on the right that I’m keeping has a broken planter in need of replacement. It also has a slightly more interesting shape though the other tree has its good points too and nicer leaves. I left the plastic on the broken pot to hold it together and cut out the top so I can water the tree and poked holes in the bottom for drainage.

Will keep it for a while on the back porch where it gets good morning sun and afternoon shade. Deciduous trees are a little more delicate than conifers but this particular Maple is grown as a street tree around the world so it’s a decent beginners tree. Ordered them from Walmart online for $22.71 each—not a bad buy for the money.

Looking forward to getting a few more. In particular I’d like to get a regular Japanese Maple and a Ginkgo biloba and maybe someday do a Redwoods of the World Collection that would include forms of Bald Cypress and Redwoods plus the Glyptostrobus tree I already have.
