Neale Osborn 1964-2015
by L. Neil Smith
A frequent and favorite contributor to the virtual pages of thIs journal, Neale Osborn, died of a heart attack lst week. He was ONLY 51 years old; I'm 69, and I'd always expected him to write _my_ obituary, rather than the other way around. It's a lot like losing a brother or a child.

Those wacky Norse. You saw their ships coming and you didn't know if it was a small group of merchants, if they were coming to steal and murder in a raid, or maybe settle in the south forty and take your best land.

When was the Best Time to be Alive?
by Richard Blake
As an historical novelist, I am often asked when was the best time to be alive. My readers expect me to say 7th century Byzantium or 17th century London, or some other time I write about. My answer, though, without a moment's hesitation, is now. The present has its ugly side, no doubt. But no one in his right mind, who is not already dying, should ever want to live two weeks before now, let alone two centuries.

Absolute Paranoia
by J. Neil Schulman
Not liking or trusting governmental power is how the United States began as a country separate from Great Britain, but as the British Lord Acton's famous quote demonstrates you don't need to be American like science-fiction author Robert A. Heinlein to distrust State power.
