“Gun control is the idea that it’s better to see a woman dead in an alley, strangled

Letters to the Editor
from A.X. Perez

Where Do We Go From Here?*
by L. Neil Smith
The October, 2003 issue of Discover contains one of the saddest letters I’ve ever read. Gil Bell, of Duluth, Georgia, writes “ … one would have to conclude that travel out of our solar system is impossible. The fusion, fission, and antimatter engines require too much fuel … The laser sail is doomed by the fact that building a 6,600-mile-wide collecting mirror is simply not feasible, and … a 600-mile-wide sail would be torn apart by cosmic debris on a daily basis. And why build a fusion ramjet when there’s no fuel in space to run it, and its design would not allow it to attain the speed it needs?

This Little Light of Mine
by Sarah A. Hoyt
The time has come to speak of many things, none of them as romantic as wax seals and kings, let alone dodos, but all of them things that must be talked about. And I don’t mean just on this blog, or just by me.

An Agenda for Boris Johnson
by Sean Gabb
In February 20095, I was invited to speak to a meeting of Conservative Future. In this, I explained what a government of conservatives would need to do if it wanted to take and keep power. At the time, I was shouted down in horror. The Conservative Government, formed a year later, paid no attention to my advice. I doubt if the Johnson Government will pay any attention. However, I send the speech out just in case.

Mothering Millenials Book Review
by Jim Davidson
Your adult child is living at home. Why is that? There are many reasons for the situation, but one of the key reasons is: you have not committed to your child's independence. It certainly is not your fault, but if you perceive that it is a problem, there is a good book to read.

Healthy Patriotism
by Sean Gangol
I know that there are libertarians who frown upon the concepts of patriotism and nationalism because they consider these traits to be nothing more than an unhealthy worship of the state. I don’t necessarily agree with this stance, since I don’t believe that there is anything wrong with loving your country and the values that made it great. I am also not afraid to call this country exceptional. While I have never ventured outside the United States, I have heard accounts from many who regularly travel overseas that there are first-world countries who haven’t quite mastered the art of good plumbing, good toilet paper and in some cases good hygiene. As Penn Jillette once put it, “Nothing will make you love America more than overseas travel.”

The Bright Side of a Situation That Never Had One
by Harding McFadden
I’m in the early stages of a new story (book? Not sure. We’ll see), and part of that research is looking into early Soviet history. This has led me to consider a number of books (note: if you happen to know of any particularly good, though not too cumbersome, volumes, let me know: I’m on Facebook and Mewe), each one of which I did a bit of looking into. More the writers than the books at first. I didn’t want to saddle myself up with some kind of Communist apologist monologue that in any way attempts to make the Reds look like anything other than they were: an evil menace. When the late Ronald Reagan called them “The Evil Empire,” he spoke arguably the greatest truth even uttered by a President, and a breath of fresh air after the placating, “Please don’t nuke us” ridiculousness of his immediate predecessor. To try to make this Evil Empire look like anti-heroes or, worse, protagonists in the story of civilization, is unforgivable.
