“Gun control is the idea that it’s better to see a woman dead in an alley, strangled
with her own pantyhose, than to see her with a gun in her hand.”—T.D. Melrose

The Sandwich From Yesteryear
by L. Neil Smith
Watch your toes and pardon the rockers on my hobby-horse. I have had an idea that won’t leave me alone until I write about it. The aurocs, you probably know, was a kind of wild bovine critter that lived and flourished in fairly recent prehistoric times. It ranged all over the Old World, from Japan and what became Sahara country, to Europe, where it first showed up about 270,000 years ago. (Homo sapiens arrived there about 100,000 years ago, when Adam and Eve got expelled from the Garden of Africa.

Resolved: The Higher The Fewer
by Sarah A. Hoyt
Guys, pssst? Can someone check on the left? Because something is seriously, bizarrely wrong. I mean, wrong enough that if the left, collectively, tripped into a hospital’s ER, they’d be slapped with a psychiatric hold. These people—collectively—are not well.

War Is Coming!!! Are You Ready … Will You Fight?
by Don McDougall
Most of us don’t want a second Civil War, though many of us will fight, and a very few even think war is a good idea. But the obvious question is what would it look like?

Open Source Healing
by Mimi Johnson and Jim Davidson
For the last few months, Mimi Johnson and Jim Davidson have been working closely with the team at KanehCN3.com which is developing Mimi’s inspirations and inventions into useful healing products. Our work makes clear certain facts about the healing arts and the people seeking to dominate them for exclusive profit. The current system is failing to heal because healed people are not revenue resources for those seeking to profit from their suffering. Other paths must now be explored.

Edward Snowden’s Permanent Record
Reviewed by John Walker
The revolution in communication and computing technologies which has continually accelerated since the introduction of integrated circuits in the 1960s and has since given rise to the Internet, ubiquitous mobile telephony, vast data centres with formidable processing and storage capacity, and technologies such as natural language text processing, voice recognition, and image analysis, has created the potential, for the first time in human history, of mass surveillance to a degree unimagined even in dystopian fiction such as George Orwell’s 1984 or attempted by the secret police of totalitarian regimes like the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, or North Korea. But, residents of enlightened developed countries such as the United States thought, they were protected, by legal safeguards such as the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, from having their government deploy such forbidding tools against its own citizens. Certainly, there was awareness, from disclosures such as those in James Bamford’s 1982 book The Puzzle Palace, that agencies such as the National Security Agency (NSA) were employing advanced and highly secret technologies to spy upon foreign governments and their agents who might attempt to harm the United States and its citizens, but their activities were circumscribed by a legal framework which strictly limited the scope of their domestic activities. Well, that’s what most people believed until the courageous acts by Edward Snowden, a senior technical contractor working for the NSA, revealed, in 2013, multiple programs of indiscriminate mass surveillance directed against, well, everybody in the world, U.S. citizens most definitely included.

Was Stalin Responsible for the Outbreak of the Cold War?
by Sean Gabb
This will be an essay with two main purposes. The first is for me to explain whether or to what extent I hold Josef Stalin responsible for the beginning of the Cold War. The second is to explain the historiography of the beginning of the Cold War. This first is a matter of analysing and judging a set of past events. The second is a matter of discussing how others have analysed and judged these events.

The New Censorship
by Sean Gangol
As long as I can remember, I have opposed censorship in all forms. I would always roll my eyes at the parents that would complain about the government not doing enough to keep their kids from viewing sex and violence on all mediums. I remember when I took a sociology class in college, one of my classmates who was a middle-aged woman said that it wasn’t enough that we have computer programs that parents can use to block websites that they would deem inappropriate for their children. She said that she was worried about her son staying at the house of a friend who didn’t have the same controls on his computer. She also mentioned the possibility of kids developing hacking skills to get around the controls. I wanted to tell her that it’s not the responsibility of the government to shield her kids from the obscene and as incompetent as the government was at everything else, it was unlikely that they would be able to prevent children getting around whatever controls they would impose on internet users. Instead I bit my tongue because I didn’t want to ruffle any feathers. What I should have said was, “Be careful what you wish for. You may just get it.” It’s an old cliché, but it’s one that always rings true.
