“Gun control is the idea that it’s better to see a woman dead in an alley, strangled
with her own pantyhose, than to see her with a gun in her hand.”—T.D. Melrose

Remote Psychologizing and Ike’s Alien Visitors
by L. Neil Smith
The practice of what I call “remote psychologizing” is very popular among those who consider themselves intellectuals. What was George Washington thinking, for example, when he decided to stop being British and start being American? What was Abraham Lincoln thinking when he decided that preserving a mere political structure was worth seeing three quarters of a million people killed?

Corrupted Markets
by Sarah A. Hoyt
Sometime ago I mentioned here the concept of corrupt markets. You guys fanned out—as you will—across the web to look for the concept and couldn’t find it. I’ve had penciled in, on my wall, to write a post about it, so maybe one of you guys (I know at least one) who have a doctorate in economics or related disciplines can research it and do it up in proper format. Yes I’m ABD but the papers I was taught to do was on literature analysis.

Personnel is Policy
by Vin Suprynowicz
Personnel is Policy. To what extent is President Trump to blame for not bringing to Washington a strong cadre of bold, skilled, aggressively loyal supporters, instead allowing the Deep State Hive to constantly laugh behind his back as backstabbers from Chris Christie to Mitch McConnell told him the Senate would approve only appointees who would gleefully, well … stab him in the back, slow-walking and obstructing the very policies for which the American public elected him?

Communications Under Tyranny
by Jim Davidson
Many long years ago, when the Internet was newer and less infested with communists, there were people who wanted to talk about their experiences without giving their names. Also in that era, there was a guy named David Chaum who wrote a paper (1981) that proved it was possible to have anonymous communications with both the content and source of the content obscured through open source cryptography then known and understood in the tech community. Also in that era, there was a Finnish hacker named Julf who set up an anonymous remailer called anon.penet.fi which became useful to many people.

Norseman’s Diaries Supplemental & A Florida Room Update
by Jeff Fullerton
Helluva day. Helluva week. Started writing this from the vacant X-ray waiting room after a long though not so bad 12 hour shift that ended an hour and a half early because of low patient census. Ended up finishing it at home because I was too tired to linger for the sake of being able to use the hospital WiFi to send it out. The ugliest aspect of my day began with a problem with my email this morning that was not loading new messages. I ended up deleting the account with intent to re-enter it like I often do when the email account on the phone gets corrupted. Only to discover that I had forgotten the password and the action was totally unnecessary because my service was suspended for lack of payment.

The Left and the Mirror
by Sarah A. Hoyt
So, over the last 24 hours, my feed and my online conversations have all been about Gina Carano. I can’t begin to tell you how completely bizarre this is for the woman who never watches TV or movies. This is not a brag, by the way. It’s a combination of being ADD and not USED to consuming my stories that way, since we only got a TV when I was eight, and even then… well, Portugal didn’t have many hours of TV a day. I go through phases of watching series—usually British mystery, though it’s starting to get hard not to find them bizarrely and stupidly “woke infused”—but usually only when I’m sick or very depressed.
