L. Neil Smith's
The Libertarian Enterprise

Number 56, September 30, 1999

"A libertarian is a person who believes that no one has the right, under any circumstances, to initiate force against another human being, or to advocate or delegate its initiation. Those who act consistently with this principle are libertarians, whether they realize it or not. Those who fail to act consistently with it are not libertarians, regardless of what they may claim."

The hurricane didn't get as far as "the foothills of the headlands", thank goodness, though we got plenty of rain. After a prolonged drought, I guess this is what the pollsters would call a statistical leveling. But like many polls, it proved to be an unreliable source.

While Floyd didn't blow that ill a wind up this way (and let's not forget that at this writing much of eastern NC is still under water), the feral gummint certainly couldn't wait to FEMA its ass on down here. And the state's statists welcomed them with open wallets ... er, arms.

What did we ever do before FEMA? Well, we rode out Hazel in '54 and managed to recover without the "aid" of a feral bureaucracy as bloated as the hog carcasses bobbing in Carolina's rivers. But in this day and age, it's du rigeur to politely accept a lift from the HinDCberg - the mother ship is gliding majestically toward us like some great feather.

All in all, it seems to become increasingly difficult to remain detached from the tentacles of the National Squid, which lurks just beneath the flood tide of oppression that blows in on the winds of collectivism. Yet through it all still shines the light -- however faint it may seem today -- of

          Liberty!
