[email protected]... AND I FEEL FINE
By the time you read this, the "00" will be upon us. (It is NOT the millenium by any measure, and computers don't know from "end time".)
There are a lot of prognosticators who are changing their positions faster than Al Gore; mostly the doom-and-gloomers are moving away from major disaster, and toward minor disruption.
In a few hours, we'll have the results of the first wave. There will be others; their severity as unknown as the first. There could be another on the 7th; another on the 31st; another on February 29th; another on March 31st; and so on. As someone with some experience in computers, defense systems, and process industry -- especially power systems (utilities), I am here to tell you that no one -- repeat no one -- knew or knows what impact there will be.
Throw in the volatile variables of human nature and government tyranny, and we've got ourselves quite a stew.

Just finished The Mitzvah (yeah, I know, but even at that I had to promote it above 20-30 other books ... serious backlog here).
If you haven't yet read it, please do so. It is a wonderful story on several levels. It will be received about as well as Joshua Perlman's bar mitzvah speech, I'm afraid (if you don't know, you'll find out), but it is a book that must be read.
Right now, I'd say there are three books in that "mandatory" category -- John Ross' Unintended Consequences, Neil and Aaron's The Mitzvah, and Vin's Send In The Waco Killers -- not necessarily in that order.
Everything else can wait.

Happy Julian New Year! And G*d save the Republic!

"Applied Digital Solutions, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADSX - news) today announced that it has acquired the patent rights to a miniature digital transceiver -- which it has named "Digital Angel" -- that can be used for a variety of purposes, such as providing a tamper-proof means of identification for enhanced e-business security, locating lost or missing individuals, tracking the location of valuable property and monitoring the medical conditions of at-risk patients.
[...]
The implantable transceiver sends and receives data and can be continuously tracked by GPS (Global Positioning Satellite) technology. The transceiver's power supply and actuation system are unlike anything ever created. When implanted within a body, the device is powered electromechanically through the movement of muscles, and it can be activated either by the "wearer" or by the monitoring facility. A novel sensation feedback feature will even allow the wearer to control the device to some degree. The "smart" device is also small enough to be hidden inconspicuously on or within valuable personal belongings and priceless works of art.
