Special to TLE New York City: "A federal judge has ordered the deportation of a 79- year-old man who served as an armed guard at slave-labor camps during World War II, the Department of Justice announced Friday (25 Oct 2002). U.S. Immigration Judge Mirlande Tadal ruled Thursday that Mykola Wasylyk, 79, should be deported to the Ukraine, the former Soviet republic he considers his native country." (As reported by the Associated Press) Why is this newsworthy you ask? Some one working as a government agent, who was "just following orders", has been deemed responsible for his actions. Granted this person's government was on the losing side of WWII, and granted he was only 18-19 at the time. The important thing to note, is almost sixty years after the war, a soldier is being held responsible for doing an immoral duty. "'Armed guards like Wasylyk ensured that Jews and other prisoners could not escape the starvation, disease, overwork and murder to which they were subjected on a daily basis in the Nazi camps,' said Eli Rosenbaum, director of the Office of Special Investigations, which brought the case on behalf of the Justice Department." Compare this to the American Penal System. 1 of every 147 Americans is behind bars(1). In our prisons, people are beaten, murdered(2), and raped by both other prisoners and guards(3). Part and parcel of rape is the spread of HIV(4). Think this qualifies as "... disease ... and murder ... to which they were subjected on a daily basis ..."? The majority of Americans serving prison terms, (one in four imprisoned) were doing so for drug offenses, up from 50,000, or one in ten, in 1980.(5) At the point when the Drug War is declared unconstitutional, do you think that police agents (federal, state and local) in this, our (unwillingly and forcibly) united States of America, need to begin wondering when their time will come? Do you think when the over 2,000 gun laws are declared unconstitutional, that a federal agent who shot a woman in the face while she was holding nothing more dangerous than a baby, might be brought to trial? Or do you think that the end result of these abuses, among others, will eventually drive our nation asunder? The parallels between our current developing police state, and that of 1930's Germany are plain to see. The end is coming, and there is nowhere to run. The Republic founded by our fore fathers, no longer exists. The last remaining question is what will you do, and when?
