If you're an incumbent politician, you have it made. Your every move is reported to the public, ensuring name recognition. Campaign donations are easy to come by, since you are already in a position to reward contributors. No one can question whether you possess the requisite gravitas for the job—you already hold it. Yet, being an incumbent has it downside, too. For one thing, your record is in plain view, for all to see. Your policy blunders are front-page news. Your words in a major public speech, such as the State of the Union Address, can and will be used against you.

An Ounce of Prevention

Recently I wrote about "Warning Signs." some of those indicators that our liberty is under serious and immiment threat. Almost all of the e-mail I received in response to that column agreed, and lamented that things are the way they are. But one of those e-mails was written by a man who, while he also agreed the warning signs were definitely of the red-flag variety, challenged me by adding, "So what can we do about it?" Good question. And certainly one that deserves an answer.

Religion and Religious Freedom

Ladies and Gentlemen, if you have read any of my previous articles for TLE, you know that I am no great fan of organized religion. Not so much because I consider any particular religion any better or worse than any other, but because religion, in general, has become to politicized, and because too many people see it as a way to garner power. In spite of this, I consider myself to be a religious person, trying to live my life by my personal moral and ethical guidelines, which can be summed up in two basic, mutually supporting principles. The first is the Zero Aggression Principle (see Bill Stone's excellent articles for more details on this, or go to http://www.0ap.org/introduction.html). For those who are not familiar with this, just think of the Golden Rule, amplified and explained, and you will be pretty close. The second major principle that guides my life is a statement by Robert A. Heinlein in "Time Enough for Love": The ONLY sin lies in hurting others unnecessarily!

A Not Very Funny Valentine

"The Vagina Monologues" (the VMs) are coming to a theatre near you...again. Eve Ensler's PC-feminist play is being dusted off on campuses and in communities around North America for production, often at taxpayer expense. Since 1998, the play has been part of a http://www.vday.org/ V-Day drive to convert February 14th from chocolates and Valentines to Vaginas and Violence - that is, to spotlighting male violence against women. But the backlash may surprise this year's promoters. The hostile reception provides another indication that society is no longer willing to tolerate political correctness.
