EDITORIAL MATTERS:

Another week passes. We almost ran out of propane (the tank was down to 1%!). We almost got the electricity cut off (I noticed the notice that was supposed to be put on the doorknob blowing in the wind out by the front gate!). Just one exciting moment after another as I work on my one-man-nursing-home-staff act—I'll be taking it on tour next year, soon to be an HBO series. Okay, maybe not.

But, we are about to go under here, money-wise, so if you can spare some change, please toss it our way. This page shows you how:

And of course, you can click on our links to various sellers of useful and/or delightful goods—we get (eventually) a small cut from each purchase. Don't hesitate.

Another week passes. And here's your own personal copy of this Reader-Supported publication. Read and enjoy!

The Walton Street Tycoons by Jim Lesczynski
by L. Neil Smith
I'm extremely happy (and very relieved) to be able to testify that sometimes it's worth the risk. As Exhibit A, I offer The Walton Street Tycoons by Jim Lesczynski, which is simply the best libertarian novel to come along in a quarter of a century or so. That you can buy it directly from Jim, and not the northeastern gatekeepers who would have censored him and kept 94% is icing on the cake.

Dispatch from the Rotting Heart of the American Mid-West
by Kevin Tulppo
"This is like being in Hell." I clearly remember saying that at around midnight a few nights before Halloween. The bar was jammed with karaoke participants and drunks commiserating the Detroit Tigers' World Series demise.

Anna Nicole: Famous For Being Famous
by Jonathan David Morris
The only thing weirder than Anna Nicole Smith dropping dead at the age of 39 is how her death somehow inspired several days of wall-to-wall news coverage. This is a woman who by most accounts was "famous for being famous." At the end of the day, "famous for being famous" is a nice way of saying no one's really sure why we knew who she was.

Unpardonable
by Lady Liberty
Many things in this country have changed since that awful day in September of 2001. The 9/11 attacks made us all just a little more aware of our own vulnerability. They made us think about how the rest of the world perceives us and why. And they scared us enough to let our political representatives have free reign to do whatever they liked as long as it was done in the name of keeping us safer from future attacks.
