You are mistaken about what Americans "broadly agree" about. No one has ever been stopped from committing a violent crime or school (or mall or church) massacre by any background check system. The only thing that will stop a violent crime in progress or a school or mall or church massacre is one or more law-abiding citizen(s) exercising his/their lawful RIGHT (not privilege granted by or controlled by government) to keep and bear arms in defense of self, family, and community. Thank you for your warning of your intention to deprive the American people of their constitutional RIGHT to keep and bear arms, not merely for hunting (which is a minor side issue) but for self defense against criminal and government depredations, as intended by the founding fathers of our FREE nation. I intend to forward your response to as many voters as I can reach on the internet.

Dear Friend,

Thank you for contacting me about gun laws and the Second Amendment. I appreciate hearing from you on this important issue. Americans broadly agree that guns must be kept from those who may pose a threat, and that the rights of legitimate hunters and sportsmen should be protected.

We must work to ensure that guns do not fall into the hands of criminals or the mentally ill through an effective background check system. We also have to strike a reasonable balance between public safety and sportsmen's rights.

I will continue to work for effective gun laws, including reinstatement of the assault weapons ban that the last Congress allowed to expire, and effective law enforcement. I will also speak out against the culture of violence that traps so many of our young people.

Thank you again for contacting me on this important issue.

Sincerely,

Barack Obama
