Bob Wallace writes, "The chattering classes and the intellectual court whores are trying to convince the public that 'free trade' with other countries (it's anything but 'free') enriches the whole country..." He never explains what is not 'free' about simply leaving Americans unmolested to buy from whomever they damn well please, as is their natural right, without getting any permission slips from or paying any fees to the parasites in Washington. And his economic understanding is positively medieval. The one thing virtually all economists agree on is that free trade -- even unilateral free trade -- is a net economic benefit to the nation that practices it. Wallace's economic ignorance is illustrated when he writes "as if people who lose their high-paying middle-class jobs should be consoled that they can buy cheap imported Chinese trinkets at Wal-Mart." Wallace needs to read Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations, or Henry Hazlitt's Economics in One Lesson. He's engaging in the fallacy of only looking at the immediate effects of a policy. What he's missing is that if prices go down for consumers, they have extra money available that they can now spend on something else or save (invest), which ends up creating more jobs. Wallace may try to claim that he's not against true free trade, but only against supposed free-trade agreements such as NAFTA, which impose onerous additional regulations on Americans. That's unlikely, given his complaints about competition from foreign producers and about Americans buying from foreigners. Kevin S. Van Horn
I get really ticked when I read things like the letter from Scott Graves. He seems to think only he and future generations are victims and that he can blame it all on those of us who were victims long before he was born. I'm 61 years old, and have paid tax on tax all my working life. I didn't set this up, and I have nothing but contempt for the whole thing, but somehow nobody thought to ask me what I wanted. I know it was all stolen. I won't ever "collect" the SS I'm supposedly "entitled" to. I don't know what I'll do when my savings are gone and I can no longer work...
