Paving Stones

Back at the beginning of the Twentieth Century the United
States faced problems. Powerful corporations controlled Congress. Crooked
political machines dominated state and local politics. Wild eyed radicals
(and/or agents provocateur working for private security companies trying to
frame said radicals) were throwing bombs. The banking system was unstable, and
recessions and full out depressions, both regional and national, struck regularly.
Immigrant criminal gangs were running wild, crooked politicians used illegal votes
by immigrants and all decent people knew those damn foreigners were wrecking the country.

The Day I Used the Government

The older and more experienced I get, the more I turn into
an anarchist. So it will give no surprise to say that I have engaged in
discussions about anarchism on Internet forums, and that the usual response
by folks who are "not quite there yet" is something like "If there were no
government, how could X get done?" Here is my personal anecdote about something
pretty clearly (or so it would first seem) in the government sphere: the conduct
of elections.

Ride Him Cowboy

From 1933 through 1986 there was an inmate rodeo at the
Huntsville Prison in Texas. Inmates who participated in the rodeo behaved
better (if only to stay in the rodeo) and had a lower recidivism rate than
other prisoners. From a penologist's point of view it was a successful program.

Prior to submitting to TLE my recent article denouncing the
warmongering NATO cheerleader, Eric Margolis, I engaged in a brief email dialogue
with Eric Garris of antiwar.com. I pointed out that Margolis, in a recent article,
"...praises Bush (and Clinton) for the NATO War Against Serbia and the installation
of the KLA gangsters as their puppet government of the occupied Serb province of
Kosovo," and I dared to ask why antiwar.com continues to give a forum to an enemy
of peace and liberty. Mr Garris was kind enough to reply to my inquiry.
