Re: "The Bar Sinister" by A.X. Perez Dear AX, You lost me. Are you saying such things as ambidextrous safeties are currently being legislated or proposed? I've not seen or heard of any, and I do watch this sort of thing closely. As for gun safety latches, levers and so forth, I find all of them to be counterproductive and, usually, just plain stupid. The ONLY real "safety" device on any gun is between the ears of the person holding the gun. If that doesn't work, nothing else matters. I carry an XD .45 that has no levers remember or foul on my rig. I don't particularly appreciate the cutesy beavertail bar or the weird triple trigger, but I can live with them because they do not represent a detail that I must remember in the few seconds I'd have to act to defend my life. I can just draw and shoot. And, since that situation isn't apt to happen very often, the amount of training time required to consistently REMEMBER that stupid lever is a big waste of time and potentially dangerous. I spend the time practicing many other more productive moves. I've carried a gun for some time and owned many. I've never had an ND. They can't go "boom" if the finger is kept OUT of the damned trigger guard until something is in the sights that needs killing. That I spend a lot of training time on. So, the bottom line is definitely that we must all be left alone to use and do those non-aggressive things that work best for us, regardless of the moaners and groaners who think they know best. Perez's interesting note in episode 488.... he states that 1/7th (~14.3%) of the population is left handed and that a properly designed tool or weapon takes that into consideration or should. OK I agree. I am a member of an even smaller percentage (< 1%) of the population that Sr Perez says doesn't count, The truly ambidextrous. By adaptation I have found that life is quite easy for the truly ambidextrous. I can sign my name with either hand, use a wrench and pound statist authoritarians with equal facility. Regarding weapons, There is my personal favorite, the Glock, which in the spirit of simplicity has a minimum of snagging protrusions like ambi safeties and other such superfluous doodads. The best safety in the world is the one between the ears. The magazine release is functional on the left side of the weapon with either hand. Practice is necessary to make this automatic. Another elegant example is the DA revolver. For the Truly ambidextrous the cylinder release can be manipulated with either hand quite easily. I am waiting for my John Ross .500 S&W Magnum a truly magnificent weapon that will make thumping SA's fun when the time comes. I digress, When Boocrats start making laws regarding the ergonomics of tools, we won't have any weapons to worry about. Is Sr Perez truly afraid of a right hander backlash? I hope not. If he is, I might recommend St Johns Wort and a trip to the range to practice his weak hand drills, whichever hand that may be for him.... Fiction Re: "Letter from Nigel via Peter Cunningham to L. Neil Smith" Since the 1930's Robert A. Heinlein used fiction to promote his ideals. The liberal Spider Robinson (many of whose sins we shall pardon for "Rah, Rah, RAH", his defense of Heinlein, and because he is responsible for some truly horrid puns. The rest are his problem.) has done the same. L. Neil Smith openly uses his books to promote libertarian ideals. H.P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard were openly racist and xenophobic. Edgar Rice Burroughs wasn't as bad, but he frequently applied racist stereotypes as a substitute for character development. As much as I enjoy their work I have to remember they were products of their times, and to be honest they could have done a hell of a lot more to overcome their background. Their writings helped reinforce racist ideas of the Twenties and Thirties. The fact is fiction helps reinforce and spread cultural ideals. We need to remake culture if the struggle to spread liberty is to survive. That means getting more pro liberty fiction out their and calling artists on spreading antifreedom shibboleths. "Look anywhere you want, we're all free men protected by the Constitution." Now just get every TV show to make a similar plug for liberty on a regular basis (twice an episode would be about right.).
