I pause in my daily perusal of your brilliant Freedom's Phoenix because I can stay silent no longer—not without throwing up, or something equally dramatic and disgusting. I just have to say that I am completely fed up with this Frosty Wooldridge, who is perhaps the the dumbest, whiniest creature on the planet this side of Rosie O'Donnell. No more BS There are two economic systems. Free markets which are regulated only by self interest. Unfree markets which are regulated by government edict and have no concern for anyone except for benefiting those who help them get elected or otherwise enriching themselves. The unfree market goes by the generic name socialism and includes any system with any form of government regulation. If the government regulates it, it not free! Some of us believe that life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are important. Those who believe in regulation by government do not believe in liberty! Dear TLE, This year's Mises Institute (mises.org) Austrian Scholars Conference, which ran this past weekend, hasn't had its videos posted yet. But I was reminded of a wonderful lecture from last year, Larry Sechrest, "Anti Capitalists: Barbarians At The Gates". Yes, part of its attraction is that capitalists come out smelling better than anti-capitalists, which might offend some of those who came to libertarian thinking from the left. Oh well. Mr. Sechrest's reasoning does bring to mind one major intellectual challenge to those who espouse liberty: How to deal with those who advocate coercion for what they believe to be "really good reasons"? We all deal with those sorts of folks, the busybodies and polypragmatoi, the folks who assume that, for example with accompanying video, if someone's horses are taken by the local SPCA and cops that there MUST have been a "really good reason" for them to do so. Anyway, I thought that if someone hasn't seen Larry Sechrest's talk yet, they might find it worth while. Curt Howland
The new War on Poverty In the 1960's Lyndon Baines Johnson declared war on poverty. Johnson was exercising his Texas size ego, trying to out FDR FDR. Poverty won. Obama has effectively declared a second war on poverty. He will most likely lose also. Ieshua bar Miriam was right, the poor we shall always have with us. Libertarian free market doctrine predicts this. In a way I wish we were wrong. In the 1930's during the Depression we got censorship of movies, a tightening of sexual moralism, gun control laws, and a growing dependency on government. The 1980's began with a recession and was marked by a reversal of the 1960's sexual revolution and again a tightening of censorship. Please note that the relaxation of gun control laws reflected in the flawed so called Gun Owners Bill of Rights passed after the recession ended. Economic bad times are marked by an increase in sexual moralism, pressure to toe the pro government party line, gun control laws and other anti-freedom pushes. It's almost worth having a little socialism to avoid these, unfortunately socialism will not work as a means to resolve our current economic problems. If we are extremely lucky we can resolve the current recession before the repression gets worse. If we get the luck the good people of this nation deserve the stimulus program Obama inherited from Baby Bush and expanded will have enough of a placebo effect to restart the economy before the repression kicks in full speed. I really don't want to see everything get knocked back to a post WWII blind faith in government. A.X. Perez
Dear Editor, If you're reading this on a computer, with a graphical display, multiple programs displaying in their own regions, a keyboard and a pointing device, then you owe it to yourself to view what is known as The Mother Of All Demos. Doug Engelbart, in 1968, proposed exactly what you are using now: Previously this has been available as a bunch of videos, very inconvenient, but it has finally been compiled into one viewable video. In fact, the old page I had bookmarked for this demo at Stanford University is now gone. For anyone who doesn't want to take what we have today for granted. Curt Howland
P.S.: goodbye-microsoft.com Faust A few years ago one of the networks ran Schindler's List. Steven Spielberg made running it uncensored a condition of permission to run his movie. Good for him. More seriously, when events required the Suomalainen to become co-belligerents with Nazi Germany against the Soviets they forced the Nazis to respect Finland's Jews. This must be compared to Roosevelt and Churchill's betrayal of millions of of anti-Soviet Russians in Operation Keelhaul. Finland's Jews were mostly spared the Holocaust. I have been given to understand that we never got all (if any) the hostages Eisenhower and company betrayed millions of anti Soviet Russians to recover. When you make deals with the Devil, be he the Network censor or a political tyrant, make sure you do so on your own terms and that you never ever turn your back on him. The State has become so all pervasive that we have to do business with it the same way we have to do business with gravity (paraphrasing Heinlein). Just remember there is a difference between rolling with the punches and selling out (again referring to the Master). And never ever let your soul or your brethren and sistren's liberty become bargaining chips. A.X. Perez
If you haven't been paying attention, the Us Government is slapping a huge increase on chaw, cigarettes, loose cigarette tobacco, rolling papers and inexpensive cigars. They are also putting a somewhat smaller tax on pipe tobacco and higher end cigars. These taxes kick in on April Fools day (quel surprise). This is the time for interested resisters to government misuse of authority to act.While staying within the law of how much tobacco you may raise for personal use, start raising your own tobacco. Learn how to cure and blend your own personal mixes. Buy a pipe if you are not a cigar smoker, you can smoke cigarette cure tobacco in a pipe. This will produce a variety of pleasant results. By careful experimentation you can find the just right blend of tobacco species and strains to meet your taste, something the corporations don't offer (Yay, stick it to the conglomerates and multinationals at the same time!). Tobacco has a very pretty flower and is highly insect resistant (that is the purpose of nicotine you know), making it a great ornamental where it grows. This is an advantage for non users, especially combined with its value as a trade good if and when der tag arrives. Raising and blending tobacco will provide you with a hobby, maybe even a livelihood. Tobacco also has use as a poultice and can be used to make insecticide. If gardening is your thing, indoors or outdoors, tobacco is a crop you can raise with great personal satisfaction. Of course, if you are not so inclined, I must admit I have the antigreen-thumb myself, not to worry. There are other ways to extend the state the fig salute. In spite of his disclaimer of horticultural talent and skills, Simon Jester is researching which species and/or strains of tobacco grow best in his area and what its (their ) season is. He is especially trying to determine if one or more can establish itself as a volunteer crop and thus bug officialdom. Stick it to the man says he. Simon Jester

For over 50 years Americans have been taught that FDR "saved" the American Free Market with his brilliant New Deal. Acording to the modern mythology of the 40's only kooks and lunatics think FDR's New Deal was the cause of the Great Depression instead of the cure. So of course Obama is going to do what that same mythology insists worked the last time. Why wouldn't he? Newt Gingrich to Co-Sponsor Tea Parties
While the Tax Day Tea Parties have been taking the nation by storm, Newt Gingrich has decided to step up to the plate. In a video released today, Gingrich shows his support with his own message. The Tax Day Tea Parties hosted by the DontGo Movement, TCOT, and Smart Girl Politics will occur around the country on April 15. Presently Michelle Malkin, Dana Loesch, GOPUSA, and Newt Gingrich are sponsoring the movements. Gingrich says, "Just as the Contract with America brought an end to Democrat control of the House of Representatives in 1994, I see the Nationwide Tea Party Coalition as the vehicle by which conservative activists can bring about the end of Democrat control of the House of Representatives in 2010." National Communications Director Juliana Johnson states, "This is a major turn for the Tea Parties. Newt Gingrich becoming a part of this is confirming to all of us that the Tea Parties are indeed being heard around the country and that the movement will continue to grow and grow." The Tax Day Tea Parties were a result of Rick Santelli's call to arms for Republicans with the first batch occurring on February 27th with thousands of activists showing up in over 20 states across the country. George Bush recently made a speech in Calgary Canada. He said the following. I know I've displayed more sympathy for Dubya than most readers of and writers for TLE. This is based on an admittedly anti Clinton/Gore/Kerry bias and trust that their reaction to 9/11 would have been more repressive. but when a man gives me a straight line this good...
