A MESSAGE FROM THE PUBLISHER
Elsewhere in this issue of The Libertarian Enterprise, you'll
find my article, "American Rights?" I have written it for a particular
purpose.
Republicans are getting ready to cash in, politically, on the
efforts of those, this past summer, many of them libertarians or
independents, who managed to make life so wonderfully miserable for
the evil and corrupt leadership in the U.S. Senate and the House of
Representatives. The Democrats know they are doomed, and many of them
are jumping ship already, announcing that they won't be running for
reelection.
For those of my readers too young to remember, this is the way the
so-called Republican Revolution started in 1994. Unfortunately, most
of the Republicans who swept the House back then were not all that
interested in liberty. The rest had their revolution jerked out from
under them by the usual compromisers, so anxious to retain power that
they compromised with the very evil they had been elected to get rid
of.
We libertarians can't do much to change what's about to happen. We
are too few in number, we have too little money, and our own party has
been stolen from us and demolished by unspeakable political trash.
What we can do is operate on the nuances, using whatever leverage
circumstances present us with, to steer events in a more acceptable
direction.
Republicans, for example, are absolutely underwear-wettingly
terrified that libertarians, independents, and genuine old-school
Goldwater conservatives (as opposed to self-deceiving Reagan-type
conservatives) might join together in a third party movement that
won't have to work very hard to split the vote and strip them of their
otherwise certain victory over the Democrats in 2010. You can hear the
fear in Limbaugh's voice each time a caller brings the subject up and
he has to plead with listeners sick and tired of stupid, mush-mouthed
excuse-making would-be wheeler-dealers like Newt Gingrich and Michael
Steele.
Those of us in the general freedom movement will have to convince
the Republicans that they have no choice but to compromise with us, to
give us what we want, if they are ever planning to get the win they
want. We have to make them understand that we can find no reason to
prefer their limp-wristed incompetent fascism over Obama's Marxist
hordes.
It's up to them to convince us otherwise.
For now, as a start, take the item I've written for this issue,
"American Rights?" and send it to every Republican you know. It will
give them something to think about as they're washing and drying their
underwear.
