Neil Smith of Atlas Shrugged: Part One You Wrote, "Extra points must surely go to Rebecca Wisocky as the infinitely detestable Lillian Rearden. What the hell did Hank ever see in that bitch?" What he saw in her was the "Prize" that he had fought his way up from nothing for. Unfortunately he didn't realize that it was hollow. Lillian Reardon had nothing inside her, when she realized that Hank DID, that hollow place was filled with bitterness and the need to destroy him to prove her own self-worth. One of the many tragedies that littered the book. Just as they litter the world of today. Think of how many of the "damaged" and "broken" people you've seen in the course of your own life started out as happy, optimistic Children. "Something" happened to them. What? Denis Foley
Secure Borders Every time either Former President Bush or Current President Obama have called for Immigration Reform those opposed to it raise the objection that first we need to secure the Border with Mexico. If you live in an urban neighborhood where illegal aliens frequently commit burglary smack dab on the Border or on a Ranch people entering illegally trespass through regularly this phrase has one meaning, minimizing these intrusions. It is this realistic concern that politicians have mixed with xenophobia and fear of crime to refuse to deal with correcting the immigration laws as they now exist. Arguably, correcting these laws would reduce the number of people sneaking into th US, but this, of course, will not satisfy those who call for controlling the Border. And, lets be realistic, you can't put up enough fence , put out enough agents, fly enough drones to do more than slow down those crossing over. Thus the Border will never be secure and there is no way immigration reform will ever be properly addressed. Unless we conquer Mexico, But then we'll have to protect the Guatemalan Border. So conquer Guatemala. But that means conquering everythind to the Tierra de Fuego at the tip of South America. Then we'll have to conquer Canada, and our borders will be secure. Except from Nuit tribesmen coming across the Bering Ice from Siberia. Maybe this is what the opponents to Immigration Reform want? A.X. Perez
To which L. Neil Smith replied: I can solve—I have solved—the immigration problem handily. Grant American statehood to any Mexican state (or Canadian province) that will ratify our Bill of Rights by a 2/3 majority. That should keep those two governments fairly busy without our having to risk a life or spend a red zinky. L. Neil Smith
And to which Neale Osborn replied: What I want is to eliminate the reasons most seem to be coming- to deal illict drugs (legalize'em and end the problem) or all the freebies we give to "illegal" aliens (welfare, food stamps, housing subsidies, scholarships from taxpayer funds, free health care, free legal representation, free primary education [while it is sub-par to us, it is quite excellent to many of the "illegals"], and whatever perks I overlooked). THEN the "problem" will only be made up of good solid wannbe citizens, the exact type of people who have helped make us the country we were. Neale Osborn
And Richard Bartucci replied: I try to be scrupulous in avoiding the term "legalize," using instead "decriminalize." Just what the hell need is there for people to have some kind of "legal" sanction to do things to themselves, in the privacy of their own bloodstreams and brains? Might as well talk about "legalizing" home-baked bread. Anent Mr. Smith's proposal—first put forward, to my recollection, in Hope—to begin expanding these United States by plebiscite to annex the states of Mexico (and by extension, the provinces of Canada), I think it a solution which can be embraced in a nation where government is held from lawlessness by enforcement of the Bill of Rights. Do it any other way, and the populations of these regions will, ceteris paribus, use their votes to "spread the wealth around," Obama-style. Richard Bartucci

Spaulding, 34 Minn. 3621. "These principles apply as well to an officer attempting to make an arrest, who abuses his authority and transcends the bounds thereof by the use of unnecessary force and violence, as they do to a private individual who unlawfully uses such force and violence." Jones v. State, 26 Tex. App. I; Beaverts v. State, 4 Tex. App. 1 75; Skidmore v. State, 43 Tex. 93, 903. "An illegal arrest is an assault and battery. The person so attempted to be restrained of his liberty has the same right to use force in defending himself as he would in repelling any other assault and battery."(State v. Robinson, 145 ME. 77, 72 ATL. 260). "Each person has the right to resist an unlawful arrest. In such a case, the person attempting the arrest stands in the position of a wrongdoer and may be resisted by the use of force, as in self- defense."(State v. Mobley, 240 N.C. 476, 83 S.E. 2d 100). "One may come to the aid of another being unlawfully arrested, just as he may where one is being assaulted, molested, raped or kidnapped. Thus it is not an offense to liberate one from the unlawful custody of an officer, even though he may have submitted to such custody, without resistance."(Adams v. State, 121 Ga. 16, 48 S.E. 910).
