 THE LIBERTARIAN ENTERPRISE Number 623, June 12, 2011 "The State is Crumbling"

Neil Smith's The Libertarian Enterprise A "hacked" Twitter account, shirtless photos and a bulging crotch shot were all that was needed to once again divert the attention of the American public away from the truly pressing matters that our nation is facing. While New York Representative Anthony Weiner joins the deviant ranks alongside former Republican Senator Larry "Wide Stance" Craig and on again/off again retired QB Brett Favre the ever reliable Propaganda, oops Press Corps, has been quick to remind us plebes that they are here to "expose the truth" regarding our elected representatives in Congress. For the past few weeks, with their relentless coverage of the so called Weinergate scandal, they have endeavored to show us how deep they are willing to dig to hold politicians accountable as the "watchdog of government". All of this would be utterly laughable, of course, if Americans didn't fall for the usual smoke and mirrors. As per design Americans have been whipped up into a moral frenzy, harping upon the fact that Congressman Weiner is a dirty liar and a scumbag for his actions. I agree that the Congressman's online antics were adulterous and immoral and that he was wrong for initially lying about them, but the fact remains that he did not do anything legally wrong. The cyber "relationships" that he engaged in were initiated by consenting adults. There is no evidence to indicate that Mr. Weiner bribed the women into remaining silent about their liaisons with him. This is purely a moral issue that Mr. Weiner must make right with his wife and, if he has even an iota of faith, his God. Furthermore if we are the pure democracy that the media and politicians adamantly tell us we are, it is ultimately the people's fault for electing someone of such questionable moral character to public office. Given the fact that the divorce rate in the U.S. is at fifty percent and that infidelity is widespread, Congressman Weiner must truly be "a man of the people". If anything, this media circus has raised the the age old issue of electing "liars and crooks" to political office. If the media—and most Americans for that matter—were so concerned about exposing the misdeeds of our supposed representatives why not start with every member of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of our federal government? The vast majority of folks elected and appointed to office (with the notable exceptions of Ron Paul, his son Rand and a score of others) make their living through lying and deceiving the American masses. If the media is so concerned about transparency and accountability in government, why not reopen the investigation into the JFK assassination? How about exposing the fable of the Gulf of Tonkin incident, which former Defense Secretary Robert McNamara admitted was a complete lie to justify escalating US military involvement (which cost 58,000 American servicemen and millions of Vietnamese civilians their lives) in Southeast Asia? Why don't our self-appointed watch dogs inform "we the people" about the fact that FDR's administration allowed the attack on Pearl Harbor to occur to suck the US into World War II, in addition to suppressing evidence that proved that Japanese-American citizens were not a national security threat who needed to be locked away in concentration camps? Why don't they expose the countless inconsistencies and outright fabrications of the 9/11 Commission Report? Why do they insist on continuing to promote the long discredited ideas of centralized Keynesian economics, never ending foreign wars, and the Leviathan police/nanny state? The truth is that the media, envisioned by our Founding Fathers as the "fourth branch of government" that would hold the Feds accountable to the people, has become nothing more than a mouthpiece. Various media outlets such as FOX and CNN may have a respective "conservative" or "liberal" bent, but they ultimately promote the same agenda: the expansion of government at the expense of individual liberty. Due to this agenda, they keep the people inundated with constant and irrelevant "news": the latest celebrity gossip, fashion news and the modern day bread and circuses of professional sports. Distracted with this inanity, the people are totally clueless as to what their government is doing. How many Americans are aware of the fact that just two weeks ago the Senate extended the viciously unconstitutional PATRIOT Act? How many know that President Obama has illegally usurped Congress to unilaterally initiate and continue American military intervention in Libya? And while they may rightly complain about having to bail out the corporate criminals and international banksters how many know that the Federal Reserve sent a large chunk of the bail out money to foreign banks, including one owned by Muammar Gaddafi, whose country we are bombing? With this in mind, it should be fairly obvious that the hoopla surrounding "Weinergate" is simply business as usual for the resident propagandists of the lame stream media. As we continue to face a skyrocketing national debt, more pre-emptive wars of aggression and increasingly invasive, Orwellian surveillance and security measures the media lackeys will seek to distract us even more than we already are from the pressing, relevant issues facing these United States. If we are to reclaim our constitutional form of government and become a free people again, we must learn to think outside the box of spin and deception.
