But there's a particle of truth here, too. The same period of 19
or 29 years has, in fact, been marked by shrinking rack space in grocery stores and
drugstores for genuine science fiction—rack space incongruously occupied instead
by offerings featuring dragons, dwarves, or enchanted swords on their covers. Where I
differ with editors and agents—to whom I've vainly tried communicating this point
for every one of those 19 or 29 years—is in my belief that genuine science fiction
is dying from self-inflicted injuries. Furthermore, I believe I'm uniquely qualified to
pontificate on the subject; in many respects, I'm one of the few individuals left, in the
whole wide world, actually writing the stuff; which is to say, still writing genuine
science fiction.

When We Say "Immigrants," We Really Mean Mexicans

Last Friday night, I found myself unexpectedly sucked in by ABC's
broadcast of Nik Wallenda's tightrope walk across Niagara Falls from America into
Canada. At the end of his journey, as part of a made-for-TV stunt within a made-for-TV
stunt (I guess that would make it a meta-made-for-TV stunt), Wallenda was greeted by
two friendly Canadian guards, who welcomed him to the country and asked him for his
passport. Wallenda joked that he'd have to go back for it, then produced the requested
document wrapped in a piece of plastic. Even if he hadn't done this, my guess is Canada
would've let him in—not just because the stunt was coordinated by both countries, but
because, when it comes to immigration, America and Canada don't care.

President Obama has invoked executive privilege to support his buddy
Eric Holder's refusal to turn over documents regarding Fast and Furious to the House
Oversight Committee. He is now fully in the controversy and is supporting the Department
of Justice in its cover up (AG Holder isn't the only one involved) of its behavior in
Operation Fast And Furious. If you google "obama fast and furious documents june 20 2012"
you will get an eye full. Even the mainstream press will not be able to walk away from this.
