Attribute to L. Neil Smith's The Libertarian Enterprise Actually, President Obama is right. Assault rifles don't belong on the streets of America. They belong in people's closets and gun vaults and on rifle racks at home. From time to time they belong in vehicles being transported to the target range or the fields for casual plinking and varmint hunting. They belong in all honest Americans who can afford them's homes, and the homes of the non violently dishonest. For self defense in the streets handguns are usually more appropriate. So He who Am in Charge is right, but not for the reason he thinks. Let me tell you a secret. You already know it but let's put it in the light. Serious collectors and shooters don't have anything to fear from any restriction except an inflation of prices and an appreciation of their investments in guns. Exceptions will be written in by Congress and the President to take care of friends and if you can't find a way to tap in to them you aren't trying. Criminals will not be affected, they get their stuff on the black market anyhow. Who will be affected is the non gun person who is out to buy an AR or AK that will promptly go to the back of her closet and only get hauled out about twice maybe three times a year so that she gets enough practice to be more dangerous to the person she is shooting at than to herself. Who will be effected will be the casual plinker who doesn't have the time or sufficient desire for a gun to try to meet the requirements. Who will be affected will be those of us who think that "shall not be infringed" definitely means shall not be banned. Who will be affected those of us who view respect for the Second Amendment as a guarantee that all our other rights will be respected, that its violation is the first step in creating a government engaged in a "a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism" by stripping us of the tools we need to resist this design. In the debate on Tuesday 16 October 2012, President Obama stated he would seek an assault rifle ban, but that that there were more important steps to be taken in reducing violence. Of course, his goal was to imply that even if he can't get the ban these other steps should be pursued. I commend to Mr. Obama that the creation of a free society instead of the semi-free society we have will go a long way to ending the anger, despair, soul numbness and poverty that fuel violence. To be honest, I do not think he or Mr. Romney are the men to lead this effort. Was that worth reading?
