EDITORIAL MATTERS
A NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER Okay, I freely admit from the outset that the following is wholly selfish and self-serving. I guess I'm entitled to that from time to time. It makes me inexpressibly happy to announce that my beautiful and talented daughter has presented me with a brand new bouncing baby ... musical. Out of the clear blue (or these days, gray and frozen) sky, the young person best known to Internet and FaceBook as Giovanni Angelo Martelli, or just "Gianni" (pronounced "Johnny") has determined to put together and direct a local, but entirely professional production of 1776. That's right, the splendiferous, sprawling musical story of the signing of the Declaration of Independence that first brilliantly starred William Daniels (the voice of "Kit" in _Knight Rider_) as John Adams—more recently it's been Brent Spiner—Ken Howard as Thomas Jefferson, and Blythe Danner who will tear your heart out as Martha Jefferson. I love the movie, and it almost never fails, at one point or another to make me weep with joy at a point in history in which almost everybody seemed to know what was going on, and what the issues were. And here, for me, at least, is the best part. I get to perform the part of John Hancock, President of Congress. Not all readers of my fiction and non-fiction are aware that I worked as a musician through high school, college, and the early days of my first marriage. I haven't performed publicly for a long time and I'm more excited about it than I can quite express. I hereby promise to address the role with all of the dignity, all of the style and grace, that Ernie's ancestor deserves. Gianni and I will be back next week with more details and a chance for you to participate at a time when this play has more meaning than ever. I am, believe me,
