While the battle for equality before the
law was one of the most important political
revolutions in history, we were a nicer people
when we were free to offend one another.

Good Offenses Make good Neighbors
by L. Neil Smith
There are, this very minute, a myriad of imperious directives circulating on the Internet, with regard to the official, proper, respectful, and, above everything, politically correct observance of Halloween. Elementary, middle, and high school principals, deans and student committees in what we jokingly call higher education, publications on the gooshy Hubert Humphrey left, have issued uncountable "thou shalt nots" concerning what kinds of costumes are "appropriate" and what are not. That's why I call them "Notsies".

The Most Admirable Insect
by Paul Bonneau
One can admire the honey bee, for obvious reasons; industrious, driven, concerned (even if only instinctually) for the good of the hive and willing to die for it, brave. When one opens a hive and sees them all lined up on the top bars trying to decide what is happening and what they should do about it, before the first bit of smoke reaches them to help them decide, they can be positively endearing. But an even more admirable insect is the termite.

The Phenomenon of the Reptile Show: a Free Market Triumph
by Jeff Fullerton
It has been a very busy summer between trying to catch up on various hobby related projects after finally getting my pickup truck off the back burner and getting it in service again. And on top of that—a death in the family and picking up extra time at my real job. Slowly but surely I am starting to catch up.

Writing Drills #1
by Terence James Mason
Back when I wrote No Loopholes, it was an outgrowth of an attempted political thriller (with, of course, a strong libertarian bent) with the working title Extreme Justice. I'm trying to get back to it (amid the distractions of day to day life and the onslaught of outrages from 1600 Penn and points east), and with your indulgence I'll share the random political speech, very much in draft form. Commentary is welcome.

EDITORIAL MATTERS

My wife asked me what a "tunderstorm" was, seeing as how I had mentioned those things last issue. As best I remember, it is a combination thunderstorm and soiree, but don't quote me on that—I've been wrong before.

Someone described this here article as proof that "the vast majority of people simply don't think for themselves": [link]

Alas, I think he is correct. Which casts a bit of doubt on that old "democracy", "republic", and "land of the free and home of the brave" thing, doesn't it. Suggestions for a fix will be received at the usual address.

And for some good laughs, check out these two live blogs for the "republican" "debate":

Main event debate

The translations from the original words to the meaning of those words is funny, funny, and funny. Also sad, of course because we are "governed" by complete pisswits, but you knew that already.

Finally, "what's with the blasting from the pasting for L. Neil Smith's contributions to his own magazine?" you ask. It's because El Neil is busy with some important stuff that needed doing and so he is doing it. He will be back shortly as soon as it is done.
