They opine that the minimal (and that is all they are, minimal) promises that the Government will restrain itself from tyranny are obsolete. They claim that changing times have made freedom of thought, the right to bear arms, any right not to be detained or searched with clearly stated just cause or to be free from government snooping are just too dangerous to stand. These people don't get that our brains are hardwired with emotions evolved in the Paleolithic Era. They are so convinced of their own righteousness or marinated in their own evil they can not accept the idea that the Bill of Rights is made of rules that are necessary to a civil, free society. As human beings continue to evolve we lose certain physical characteristics. One day we will no longer have vestigial inner eyelids, vermiform appendices, coccyges, or wisdom teeth. But we will never stop being the Paleolithic killers who need their state to guarantee the rights promised in the Bill of Rights. The process of evolution is muchly misinterpreted as having some kind of wise normative guidance aimed at the achievement of a species' "higher" condition, whereas it is purely adaptive to the environment in which the species survives. H. sapiens might well have been getting rid of the vermiform appendix under environmental selection pressures before the development of the surgeon's art made it possible to tweak out a pus appendix before it foreclosed the individual's engagement in reproduction, but would an appendix-less naked killer ape have been a "better" type of H. sapiens? There prevails among the governmentally inclined "the belief that they can make people...better," that they can ordain behavior (and even physical characteristics) that make us little folk the very best possible little folk for life in the government's "best of all possible worlds." This is the basis for progressivism, which is a political philosophy arising out of dissatisfaction with human nature itself. With regard to the vermiform appendix, consider that the progressives were the political faction among whom had arisen the notion that human males would be better off without their foreskins, and who had therefore moved to institute "routine infant circumcision" as an ostensible public health measure. (Setting aside the dickerings among the urologists, the pediatricians, and the obstetricians—which last are the people performing almost all of these snipperies, and who get paid for these procedures right handsomely by health "insurance" companies -the premise is pretty plainly purest quackery.) Given that the progressives don't want men to walk around with intact cocks, how should we be surprised by their desire that the "phallic imagery" of firearms also be foreclosed to us "hobbits"?
