Why Isn't That Bitch In Jail?
by L. Neil Smith
For just short of 40 years, as they climbed the political ladder
to world domination, William Jefferson Blythe Clinton and his wife, Hillary Rodham
Clinton, have been associated with a trail of corpses—both their friends and their
enemies; they don't discriminate—outrageous lies, rapes, questionable deals,
misdemeanors and high crimes that make them seem like characters out of the Italian
Renaissance. Roll over, Lorenzo de Medici.

How To Teach
by Kaptain Kanada, aka Manuel Miles
Why is home schooling of interest to Libertarians (and many
others)? We believe that: a) The State doesn't own our children, b) the "public"
(government) schools do a poor job of educating them, and c) government schools
are primarily interested in dumbing down their inmates in order to make them
placid, unquestioning slaves of The State.

Great Again
by Tyrone Johnson
Recently, candidates Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, as well as others, have
been claiming that they will [make America great again. So I thought it would be useful to
examine two things that seem to be impediments, right now, to American greatness. I agree
with de Tocqueville that America can repair its faults, as well as with his idea that America
isn't more enlightened than other nations.

Death to America?
by Sean Gabb
Talking about the future is often a sure recipe for looking like a
fool. However obvious it may seem to us, nearly everything that happened in the past was
unexpected at the time. I am not aware of anyone in 1639 who believed the Stuart State
was about to collapse. Nor do I think anyone in 1788 predicted the occurrence and course
of the French Revolution. The course of the Great War repeatedly took all the clever men
by surprise. The difficulty with looking ahead is partly that most of the facts are unknown,
but partly that the facts already established will be seen out of focus. We always tend to
see the world through the twin lenses of unreasonable fear and of wishful thinking. For the
world as it is, facts already established provide some correction. For the world as it may
be, the only correction is to wait and see. I will, therefore, not predict the decline of American world power.

E-Book Round Up: Free is Beautiful
Reviewed by Sean Gangol
This particular book Free is Beautiful: Why Catholics Should be
Libertarian by Randy England, caught my eye because it was refreshing to see that
not all Catholics share the Marxist beliefs of their current pope. It is also
interesting to see libertarian arguments being made from a Catholic standpoint.
England starts off by using an Old Testament story about the period after Moses,
where the Israelites were ruled by judges, who mostly settled disputes and provided
leadership during a time of war. The people who were unsatisfied with the way the
judges ruled went to the prophet Samuel to demand that a king be anointed. Samuel,
who is not really onboard with this, prays to God for assistance. Basically God
tells Samuel to let his followers have a king, but to make sure that they understand
the consequences of what will happen, once a king is anointed.

Farnham's Freehold by Robert A. Heinlein: A Book Review
by Jeff Fullerton
Saturday morning in the wake of the Snowpocalypse that has buried
Greater Appalachia it looks as if another chapter in the Norseman's Diaries will be
forthcoming. Before I get started on that will come the daunting prospect of digging
out and who knows what else will happen in the final week of January. As I put the
finishing touches on this book review. Another Robert A. Heinlein and what is my
favorite among all his novels: Farnham's Freehold. Which was also the source
that introduced the concept of Freeholder to my mind and vocabulary. I had long been
intrigued by the comical rendition of a makeshift sign on the front cover of the
paperback version advertising and informing prospective customers that might
patronize a post nuclear apocalypse trading post.

An Excerpt from Ares, A Work In Progress
by L. Neil Smith
AUTHOR'S NOTE: The novel Ares, which I seem to have begun in 2002,
is a part of the "Ngu Family Saga" that begins with Pallas, and continues with Ceres,
both of which are published by Phoenix Pick and are about the homesteading of the asteroids they're
named for. _Ares_ fits in between them. It is about a three-sided struggle to settle, terraform,
and control the planet Mars. This chapter introduces one of those sides, those who own and control
the government of what's left of the United States of America, I hope to have the rest of the story
told by summer (of 2016), when you can meet the other two sides: the Martian colonists, and the
Pallatians wh arrive to rescue them.

Sorry, Vin. I've been tired and befuddled and stuff like
that for a while. Anyway, what I'm trying to say, is Vin
Suprynowicz has a new novel out, The Miskatonic Manuscript—another
tale of the adventures of the people working in a
rare books bookstore located in Providence, Rhode Island. I
seem to remember that in The Testament of James, the first
book in this series, the bookstore was in Boston. I do get
confused a lot, though. Or perhaps the next tale in the
series will be set in Mystic, Connecticut or somewhere?
That's the great thing about getting old: no end to
surprises!
Be that as it may, this book has a beautiful cover by Boris
Vallejo featuring a naked woman and a dinosaur. The
technical title for the series is "Case Files of Matthew
Hunter and Chantal Stevens", Mr. Hunter being the proprietor
of Books on Benefit, the rare-books bookstore, and Ms.
Stevens being his girlfriend and a retired commando of some
ability in the fighting trade.
The theme of the book is "what if they gave a war on drugs and
someone fought back?" Also it is about the discovery of a
new letter by H.P. Lovecraft and the discovery of the
reality behind one of his stories ("From Beyond" reprinted
as an appendix to the book). And it gets complicated from
there. But always interesting, entertaining, and thought
provoking.
I enjoyed the tale and now highly recommend it to you.
