Death to America?

Talking about the future is often a sure recipe for looking like a fool. However obvious it may seem to us, nearly everything that happened in the past was unexpected at the time. I am not aware of anyone in 1639 who believed the Stuart State was about to collapse. Nor do I think anyone in 1788 predicted the occurrence and course of the French Revolution. The course of the Great War repeatedly took all the clever men by surprise. The difficulty with looking ahead is partly that most of the facts are unknown, but partly that the facts already established will be seen out of focus. We always tend to see the world through the twin lenses of unreasonable fear and of wishful thinking. For the world as it is, facts already established provide some correction. For the world as it may be, the only correction is to wait and see. I will, therefore, not predict the decline of American world power.

E-Book Round Up: Free is Beautiful

This particular book Free is Beautiful: Why Catholics Should be Libertarian by Randy England, caught my eye because it was refreshing to see that not all Catholics share the Marxist beliefs of their current pope. It is also interesting to see libertarian arguments being made from a Catholic standpoint. England starts off by using an Old Testament story about the period after Moses, where the Israelites were ruled by judges, who mostly settled disputes and provided leadership during a time of war. The people who were unsatisfied with the way the judges ruled went to the prophet Samuel to demand that a king be anointed. Samuel, who is not really onboard with this, prays to God for assistance. Basically God tells Samuel to let his followers have a king, but to make sure that they understand the consequences of what will happen, once a king is anointed.

Farnham's Freehold by Robert A. Heinlein: A Book Review

Saturday morning in the wake of the Snowpocalypse that has buried Greater Appalachia it looks as if another chapter in the Norseman's Diaries will be forthcoming. Before I get started on that will come the daunting prospect of digging out and who knows what else will happen in the final week of January. As I put the finishing touches on this book review. Another Robert A. Heinlein and what is my favorite among all his novels: Farnham's Freehold. Which was also the source that introduced the concept of Freeholder to my mind and vocabulary. I had long been intrigued by the comical rendition of a makeshift sign on the front cover of the paperback version advertising and informing prospective customers that might patronize a post nuclear apocalypse trading post.

An Excerpt from Ares, A Work In Progress

AUTHOR'S NOTE: The novel Ares, which I seem to have begun in 2002, is a part of the "Ngu Family Saga" that begins with Pallas, and continues with Ceres, both of which are published by Phoenix Pick and are about the homesteading of the asteroids they're named for. _Ares_ fits in between them. It is about a three-sided struggle to settle, terraform, and control the planet Mars. This chapter introduces one of those sides, those who own and control the government of what's left of the United States of America, I hope to have the rest of the story told by summer (of 2016), when you can meet the other two sides: the Martian colonists, and the Pallatians wh arrive to rescue them.
