What Shall I Write Next?
by L. Neil Smith
Over the past three and a fraction decades, I have managed to write about one book per year, some of them nonfiction, a couple of them political "thrillers", and the great bulk science fiction adventures. A few days after you read this, I shall have turned 70 years of age, and while I am by no means ready to kick the bucket, I am compelled to recognize that there is a limit to all things, even to my own precious existence. I was told, when I underwent cardiac bypass surgery earlier this year, that I might expect it to add 20 years to my life (can you imagine me at 90?), so the question before me now is this: how shall I spend them? What are the next 20 books I should write?

The British Local Elections:
Yawning over the Results

by Sean Gabb
There were local elections yesterday across much of the United Kingdom —Scottish and Welsh parliaments, London Mayor and Assembly, and a sprinkling of English local authorities. Most of the results are not in yet, and I have no intention of looking at them very closely. They are in themselves a short term issue, interesting and important to a few obsessives and to anyone who hopes to make financial gain from whoever is now in. They are interesting and important to me only so far as they contribute to a longer term realignment of our politics.

Why the Left-Wing Seems Insane
(Mostly Because They Are)

by L. Neil Smith
Every single theory, every single notion ever conceived and cherished by the men and women we call liberals—the socialsts who refer to themselves as "Progressives"—and every single program ever derived from them over more than a century, has proven to be wrong-headed, futile, and ultimately destructive to individuals and to civilization.

A Message From the Publisher ...

Where's My Damn MacArthur Prize?

Recently I've heard a couple of non-libertarian commentators imply the Libertarian Party Presidential nomination is sewed up for former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson, who also ran for President in 2012. I have always thought it extremely bad policy to run the same loser twice.

You are free to write this off to the vanity of an old man (which is what, to my surprise, I am), but I can't help thinking, if there were anything to Johnson, I'd have heard from the man personally by now.

At the age of 70, I am likely the senior writer of the movement. Over three decades, I have written thirty-odd libertarian books of various kinds, and am presently at work on several more. In October, I will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Libertarian Futurists to go along with my four Prometheus Awards. A friend put my policy manual Down With Power in Johnson's hand and I have never had so much as a word of thanks. In my view "discourtesy" hardly expresses it.

I do have issue differences with the former Governor. It is not the place of any libertarian candidate to present a "libertarian tax program". Taxation is evil. Taxation is theft. Taxation is slavery. Taxation is the fuel of war. A "libertarian tax program" is like a "libertarian" plan to exterminate the Jews. The centerpiece of former Governor Johnson's platform is a "libertarian tax program". But my real point is his discourtesy, and lack of awareness of the history of the movement and party, most of which I lived through and participated in.

So who do I plan to vote for? That's a topic for another day. But just now, due to other developments, NOTA is looking better and better.

Your mileage may vary.
