Attribute to L. Neil Smith's The Libertarian Enterprise
I read a lot. And a lot of books are okay reading, if I get them for free or for a dollar or two from Amazon.com for my Kindle Reader app (my wife uses the real Kindle). But every now and then a book is so good it is like a rushing river roaring over me.
This week I had a rushing river roar over me. The book was The Hidden Truth: A Science Fiction Techno-Thriller by Hans G. Schantz. Mr Schantz, or rather Dr. Schantz (he's a physicist), has given us the best science fiction techno-thriller since whatever Neil Stephenson's last book was. I could not put it down, and read it all night long and didn't finish until the sun had been up a while. That wasn't long enough for my eyes to stop working as is the case with Mr. Stephenson's books, so there is that.
Do I recommend you run right out and buy this book? YES!
The book was recommended to me as "Ayn Rand meets Dan Brown." No, I would say it was more like "Ayn Rand meets In the Country of the Blind by Mike Flynn". There is a long-time conspiracy of bad people who will kill you if they even suspect you might suspect they have a scientifical secret. The tale concerns a high-school student who accidentally discovers an odd remark in an old physics book published in 1909. Then he discovers that the remark has been removed from the on-line scans of the book. As he and his computer-geeky friend start trying to find out what that is all about, people begin being killed and disappeared and FBI agents who aren't really FBI agents start showing up and... well, to find out what happens next you should run right out and buy this book! Seriously!
The book builds a rich realistic world in which some things are a bit different from the world we know. 9/11 took down the White House and the Capital building, for example. Yet this is still our world, just different enough to keep us on our toes. And, if enough people buy the book, Dr. Schantz will continue exploring the (unrevealed) scientifical mystery and that murderous secret society, which has apparently been in existence since the late 19th century. Or something. I can't wait! Buy it now! Please!
