"Gun control is the idea that it’s better to see a woman dead in an alley, strangled
with her own pantyhose, than to see her with a gun in her hand."—T.D. Melrose

Nowadays, we know exactly who the Enemy

media, and criminal justice and the
administration, and most of big business.

Anatomy of a National Psychotic Break
by L. Neil Smith
It’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly six months since the “wrong” Presidential candidate got elected, and half the country went insane. Democrats, liberals, socialists, communists, left-wing collectivists of all kinds make up fantasies in their fevered brains about social, political and economic phenomena, about philosophical principals, scientific facts, and personalities related to those things, and they go stark, raving crazy when those fantasies don’t come true—and they can’t shut it out as they did the collapse of the Global Warming model. It must be kind of like coming out of a cool, dim Disney matinee and into the harsh afternoon light of unrepentant and unforgiving reality.

With a Bound, He was Free?
Donald Trump and the Nature of Victory

by Sean Gabb
Since I am pushing myself into a debate between foreigners, I must begin by explaining myself. I am not an American, and do not wish to be one. I do not live in America, and do not wish to live there. The only country I love and know well is England. This being said, I have an obvious right of audience in the debate on Donald Trump. England and America share a language. Any impartial observer looking at the two countries will see two ruling classes, almost joined at the hip, facing two subject peoples whose assumptions about the good life and how it may be promoted largely overlap. If the relationship is unbalanced by an inequality of size and wealth, what happens in either country has an inescapable effect on what happens in the other. Rules of politeness that hold me from commenting on affairs in France or Germany do not apply to America. Here, then, are my thoughts on what has happened in America during the past week.

Motivating the Technological Revolutionaries
by Jim Davidson
So, what are we doing, and why is it important? I think it is a key point that what we are doing matters, or else, why do it? And here is my view on that topic. Between 1898 and 1918, a huge number of things about America were changed. The Western frontier was closed, the Hearst newspapers lied the country into war with Spain, the Philippines, Cuba, and Puerto Rico formed the basis for America's empire (along with territories seized from Mexico in 1848 and from the South in 1865, of course), the Federal Reserve was created, the income tax was forced into existence, and America intervened in the first world war (actually the third war of a global scale, the first two having occurred in the 18th Century).

The Paranoid Thriller
by J. Neil Schulman
It’s probably no surprise to anyone who’s read my books, but I’m a long-time fan of what might best be called the Paranoid Thriller. “Paranoid Thriller” isn’t a book publishing category. You won’t find such a classification in the Library of Congress, or in the shelving system of Barnes and Noble. Amazon.com has the most cross-referenced indexing system of any bookseller I can think of and even it doesn’t seem to have that as a sub-category of fiction.

The Heartmost Desire: A Review
by Sean Gangol
In The Heartmost Desire by J. Neil Schulman we are treated in the first half of the book with essays written in the same sarcastic, blunt and witty language that I have come to expect from J. Neil Schulman. His essays cover a wide range of issues which include love, sex, food, smoking and whether one should choose to fellow his dreams. There was also an essay where he makes the case that prostitution in some ways is as virtuous as nursing. I am not sure whether I totally agree with it, but he does make a pretty good case. I also found his essay about the problems that he had pioneering paperless books before the internet became widespread to be quite fascinating. I didn’t realize that paperless books were even a thing back then.

Nihon Ishigame Year IV: Incremental Improvements
by Jeff Fullerton
Late March going into April. Its that time again close to the date when the trio of Japanese Pond Turtles—Mauremeys japonica made their debut in the article Nihon Ishigame: an Outlaw Turtle Keeper Goes Japanese. It was the start of a new direction for an old hobby where I sought to adapt to changes in the laws in order to come clean with the authorities and be able to speak more openly about my accomplishments as well as telling a story that had to be told.

A Matter of Truth
by L. Neil Smith
My regular readers will be aware that I generally approve of Donald J. Trump and of the Trump Administration. I am by no means an uncritical fan, but whenever I contemplate the alternative we were nearly saddled with, I am more than satisfied with the way I chose to vote last November. This does not amount, however, to any blanket approval of everything the Donald does or everybody who works for him. It annoyed the hell out of me, the other day, to have to listen to CIA Director Mike Pompeo, whose bloviations about Julian Assange and WiliLeaks revealed him to be a perfect fool. or a bare-faced liar.
