If you have something …you can bet that
somebody, somewhere is trying to figure out
how to appropriate, expropriate, steal, or
simply take it away from you. And most of those
schemers will be college professors and politicians.

Re: “This Is Not An Assault”, by L. Neil Smith

Like our esteemed publisher, this time around I am voting straight Republican ticket. This includes supporting Ted Cruz over Beto O’Rourke. Mr. O’Rourke is a good guy. I think he will grow up to be a good candidate for President. He is a liberal, but on many issues libertarians are more inclined to agree with liberals, and in many other cases there is room for honest men to reasonably disagree.

On many issues… in many cases… Many but not all. Mr. O’Rourke has chosen to toe the party line on gun control. On this one issue there is no middle ground, no reasonable room for disagreement. Any time someone says, “We don’t want to take your guns, actually we believe in the Second Amendment but…” they want to take your guns and they do not believe in the 2nd Amendment.

Support for gun rights is the issue I judge candidates on. Mr. O’Rourke supports denying gun rights. Even where he might disagree on gun control with his party he has indicated he would vote the Democratic Party line.

Maybe in 20 years a definitive court case will end the gun rights debate in the gunnies favor. Maybe the enemies of liberty will have won and gun rights will be dead. Maybe the evil of gun control will be exposed and its supporters forced underground for a generation or two. Then I might support Beto O’Rourke for president. But this year, I cannot support him and many other Democrats I personally admire for office. Not now, not as long as they support a party promoting gun control.

RE: “Tiny Mind On A Tiny Planet” by L. Neil Smith [in this issue]

Yup. Earth as an Interstellar Parkland. A reasonable possibility.

I would add now that it isn’t immensely hard to imagine an interstellar environmentaloid ethic which ordains that alien visitors leave nothing on “developing planets” like ours and take only their….

Self-appointed (and some appointed-by-others) experts have a solid track record of being wrong.

This is somewhat—but only somewhat—rarer in the hard sciences.

A few random observations:

Paul Krugman, fêted and Nobelprized economist claimed, among other things, that

1) If Trump got elected, the stock market would crash and not recover in the foreseeble future
2) The Internet would not affect how businesses are run any more than the Fax-machine did.

And yes, Vannevar Bush, science adviser to the US government (I can't remember his title*) opined soon after WWII that ballistic missiles were impossible, mainly because (mechanical) integration and differentiation machines could never stand the vibrations etc. in a rocket.

Now, obviously these are cherrypicked opinions, picked for the utter wrongness. However, it gives us pause to take “expert” opinion cum grano salis.

And even more so non-expert opinion.

Best

Letter from J. Neil Schulman

RE: “Tiny Mind On A Tiny Planet” by L. Neil Smith [in this issue]

I’m aware of the “vastness” of space, but not as a fact but as a technological challenge requiring only a better understanding of astrophysics and cosmology.

There was a time not long ago when the speed of sound was considered an upper limit on air travel.

Whether through wormhole or star gate or warp drive, I do not regard space or the speed of light as a barrier to interstellar, intergalactic or even inter-versal travel.

I’m not even ruling out travel to fictional places. If we can take seriously tachyons why not Heinlein’s fictons?

Last Man Standing Is Back, and Trump’s America Couldn’t Be Happier – Scott Morefield

“There’s the rub, of course. Progressives, being the type of folks who want to dominate every aspect of our lives, are certainly used to controlling what the public is ‘allowed’ to watch, and they do it with gusto, filling countless broadcast hours with what essentially amounts to poorly produced leftist propaganda”.

This could be the reason I don’t watch TV that much anymore.
