Definitions
I keep seeing people discuss gun ownership as a hobby or sport in Quora and other forums. It is these things, but most importantly it is a civil right. Some claim it is the civil right that we need to protect our other civil rights. Discussion of restrictions on who may own what type of firearm should be based on this. We are not restricting a hobby, we are not regulating a sport, we are putting limits on a civil right as essential as freedom of speech and religion, freedom from unreasonable search, the right to due process of law, and the right to vote, among others. Those who call on restricting a right bear the burden of proving that it is the most effective if not the only solution to a problem, and that the good outweighs the harm. Imagine if I called for banning Islam or Catholicism (my own faith). There are people in this country who consider this a good idea. Imagine reinstating literacy tests as a requirement for voting. People called for this after Trump won. Yet people call for gun control laws that would not have prevented massacres and won’t prevent the next massacre after each mass shooting and anyone challenging the wisdom of this comes across as some kind of fanatic or irresponsible monster, even to those who agree with them (and have a penchant for long sentences including parenthetical comments.).
I have noticed that most laws restricting firearm ownership passed during times of great risk of insurrection, 1934 and 1968 for example. Could it be that by passing these laws Congress evaded taking real steps to reduce the pressures leading to insurrection?
It could be that in the end we must accept greater restrictions on gun ownership. However, this should be a final, desperate step to deal with problems, not a “go to” answer to avoid fixing the real causes of the problems.
