Shirtsleeves To Shirtsleeves
by L. Neil Smith
I have been an interested observer of the Colorado
Rockies baseball team since about 1997, when the radio and a cold Fat
Tire were our reward, Cathy’s and mine) after a long, hellish day spent
mucking out our flood-ravaged little house in the suburbs. I had never
been a sports fan before, or much of a beer-drinker for that matter, but,
as they say, “Desperate times call for desperate measures”. It was back
in the day of the Blake Street Bombers, Larry Walker, Dante Bichette,
Andres Gallaraga, Vinnie Castilla, and later on, the great Todd Helton,
whose rookie year autograph my tiny daughter managed to obtain from him
before a game we attended.

A Clarifying Sign
by Sarah A. Hoyt
As American companies go over, one after the other to
kiss China’s dictatorial… feet, I’m finding the revolt of Hong Kong
against the mainland’s attempt at imposing tyranny upon the island is a
neat and clear separator of those who hate freedom and those who love it.

Anarchist to Abolitionist: A Bad Quaker's Journey Book Review
by Jim Davidson
One of the things that occurred to me when I first met
Ben Stone in the living room of his home in Ohio back in February 2016
was that we were kindred spirits. We were kindred, in part, because of
experiences lived in this life. He's been hit in the head many times from
a young age; so have I, though, I hasten to add, not nearly as many. He's
never had any respect for the police, never any sympathy for their gang,
never wanted anything of them but to be left alone. Same here. He's
worked for other people, but he's also walked off those jobs and insisted
that life meet him on his own terms. So he's written books and built
businesses and done things he's been trained to do such as carpentry and
plumbing. We both even like many of the same authors such as Murray
Rothbard and Paul Rosenberg.

A Road Less Traveled?
by Carl Bussjaeger
In her column, [ last week—Editor ] “The
Perilous Passage,” Ms. Hoyt raises a number of excellent points about the
dangerous straits we have reached. For the most part, I agree with her
except for the degree of danger. For instance, I think violent civil war
is an optimistic expectation.

From Feudalism, To Freedom, To .…????
by Jim Carter
Homo sapiens, and many animals, have an innate desire
to habituate as a group. Such an arrangement can be a protection from
predators. It also facilitates specialization and the undertaking of
projects beyond the capacity of a singular individual.

So, There I Am…
by Harding McFadden
I was walking into work a few weeks back, minding my
own business, when I was shouted at in the parking lot by three total
strangers. They called me a racist, asked me what the hell my problem
was, and made generally menacing gestures toward me. What was I doing to
make them so mad? I was walking in with a copy of William L. Shirer’s
The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany under my arm.

Mastering the Art of Failure
by Sean Gangol
In recent years the left has managed to turn failure
into an artform. The Democrats have been on a downward spiral since 2016
when they lost their bid for the Whitehouse. They thought it would be a
slam-dunk, since Hillary Clinton at that point was an experienced
politician that was part of the Clinton dynasty, while Donald Trump was a
loud-mouth, ex-reality TV star who happened to be the Johnny Come Lately
of the political scene. Unfortunately for them, Hillary proved to be an
unlikeable candidate who ran on the “Trump is a big meanie” sentiment as
her platform. Instead of accepting their loses like most well-adjusted
adults, they decided to come up with half-cocked conspiracy theories
about Russian collusion, which led to a two-year investigation that
produced nothing but a gigantic black hole that sucked up more money from
the tax payers.

The Norseman's Diaries Year of Reinvention Part III: Fast Forward Through Summer
by Jeff Fullerton
Fast forward. That's what I've decided to call this one
because once again I was trying to pull off the long overdue third
installment of this episode of the diaries at the end of the summer by
Labor Day Weekend and that is now long past going on October. Where did
it all go? I ask myself after having spent much of this season indoors
focused on the restoration of the Florida Room which has come a long way
from the days of winter and early spring when I struggled with various
bottlenecks that at times seemed insurmountable until overcome in a
series of tipping points that has allowed things to move forward in a
series of leaps and bounds.
