Not a Christmas Carol
One of the not so cute stories associated with Christmas is The Massacre of the Innocents. Essentially, King Herod believed the birth of Jesus was a threat to his reign and dynasty, When the Three Magi did not finger Jesus for him Herod ordered the slaughter of all the boy children less than 2 living in and around Bethlehem. Joseph had already taken Mary and Jesus to Egypt, so they were probably on the move and out of Herod’s reach. Somewhat less than 20 kids would have been killed. Some say it never happened, others that it was just another relatively minor example of Herod’s tyrannical blood lust.
Trying to kill the Messiah before He set up shop was just another minor example of Herod’s tyranny. Killing infants to hang on to power as a puppet king under Rome’s thumb was just par for course, both for Herod and so many other rulers then and now. Tyranny. when evil becomes so banal and quotidian it is just not worth saving in the historical record, and only gets one short reference in the Gospel.
Warren Zevon wrote the song “Veracruz” to commemorate Woodrow Wilson’s policies ending in the burning of the city of Veracruz and nearly starting a war between the US and Mexico. In it he essentially compares Wilson’s actions to Herod’s.
Woodrow Wilson, the great Progressive, likened onto the murderous tyrant Herod. Considering his racist, interventionist, and ultimately warlike abuses of power, works for me.

If you have not read his novels, I recommend that you do so, preferably in the order of their publication. He eventually became a champion of liberty and an enemy of the world's spy agencies. He and the late lamented Graham Greene were the last of the living classical writers. There are none to replace them nor will there be.

As much as it may pain me, I am not Heinlein. I don't know the dates, but Sam had a personal phone in The Puppet Masters that he retrieved from the nightstand with his gun. (First appearance of the classic pairing later known as "phaser and communicator"?) And I always liked the bit in Between Planets where the kid answers the phone in his saddlehorn.
