Get A Rope
by L. Neil Smith
A BLAST FROM THE PAST You may have noticed
that the shingle I’ve chosen to hang out at Sierra Times is
inscribed "Rotate the Border". You may even wonder what it means. My novel
Pallas (Tor, 1993), is a family saga of interplanetary pioneers
that might as well have been titled Little House on the Asteroid.
It won me a second Prometheus Award, and even got me a couple of
death-threats (because of the cruel way I treated one of my characters). I
have a sequel ready to write if I ever find a publisher smart enough to buy it.

Aliens Among Us
by Sarah A. Hoyt
I have in the last week come to the conclusion there
are a vast number of aliens among us. And no, I don’t mean alien
conspiracies, lizard aliens or space aliens, though the way this year is
going, I might have to apologize to the people I laugh at for believing in
those. I mean that a vast number of young people, ostensibly and obviously
human, born of human parents, have lived in conditions so different from
the rest of humanity throughout history (and most places) and been taught
so little of the real world that they’re effectively aliens.

Prior Restraint, Masques, Pronouns, & Habeas Corpus
by Jim Davidson
The bill of rights is the highest secular law of the
land. Its very first article says, “Congress shall make no law respecting
an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or
abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the
people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress
of grievances.”

Walking Reflections
by Cathy L.Z. Smith
I took a walk today—which is something I’ve been
needing to do for quite some time (it’s been at the very least, months).
The weather was nice (50s, sunny, warm as long as I stayed out of the
shade) and predicted to end in the next couple of days with more snow and
unusually cold temperatures. So, even though I had other things to do, I
made myself go.
