Listen to the Women
by L. Neil Smith
*BLAST FROM THE PAST* A fellow I know offers
what he thinks is instruction in self-defense for women. Among other things,
he advises them to buy .22 caliber pistols because they’re cheap to feed
(which is true enough), easy to get proficient with (also true), and, in his
opinion, perfectly adequate for killing or driving off a rapist, mugger, or
burglar. The trouble is, his opinion and advice in this final connection are
likely to get his students killed.

Eating Our Seed Corn
by Sarah A. Hoyt
Suddenly the word “Gerontocracy” is in everyone’s lips,
as though they’d woken up this morning and realized our leadership is old
beyond reason. They’re not wrong. But they’re also not right. I mean, there’s
old people and old people. And certain tendencies of old people do make the
situation very perilous. As does the speed at which society is moving coupled
with an older leadership. But then, since I was about 35, our society as been
setup to eat the seed corn.

April 19
by Mike Blessing
Today we remember that on Monday, 19 April 1993, the
Clinton Administration was so concerned about child welfare that they were
willing to kill 27 kids by asphyxiation, incineration, and automatic-weapons
fire to get at three adults accused of tax and paperwork violations.

“I am John Galt. You have six months”
by Jim Davidson
On the 18th day of the 4th month,
which people call April, Anno Domini (in the year of Our Lord) 2022, I
received two messages from God. In reference to my last essay the first
message was, “If you build it, I will come.”

Norseman’s Diaries Supplemental: A Brief B-Erf Day Special
by Jeff Fullerton
My birthday on Earth Day 2022 came and went
yesterday with not much fanfare—other than some well wishing texts from
friends and a phone call from an old best friend that I had to cut short
because I was working. Yes, they messed up with my schedule because we are
supposed to get birthdays off and it probably would not have been too much
trouble to have let me start my first vacation week a day early in on Friday
instead of today—Saturday which so happened to the the date of my annual 2
hour tech competency class which I usually schedule for vacation week anyway.
It should have been the start of a really terrific vacation with the weather
finally turning to summer like conditions for the next three days with highs
in the 80s after a rather icky April that at times as recent as this week
were more like March or even February.

Allegiance to Whom?
by Jim Davidson
If you want to recite the pledge of allegiance, I have
to ask whether you know from whom it comes? It comes from Francis Bellamy.
He hated free market capitalism. He hated independence of spirit. And he
hated a bunch of other sorts of people, as indicated in the above quote.
Also, it is imperative that you understand that you must choose this day who
ye will serve. I choose God.
