L. Neil Smith's
The Libertarian Enterprise

Number 40, July 9, 1998

"A libertarian is a person who believes that no one has the right, under any circumstances, to initiate force against another human being, or to advocate or delegate its initiation. Those who act consistently with this principle are libertarians, whether they realize it or not. Those who fail to act consistently with it are not libertarians, regardless of what they may claim."

PUBLISHER'S NOTE: It's with enormous pride that I present you the most unusual issue of TLE we've ever published. Don L. Tiggre and Sunni Maravillosa are the masterminds behind the Liberty Round Table and its annual essay contest for young people. Its importance -- to the movement and the whole wide world -- cannot be overestimated.

When I attended my first Libertarian Party national convention for more than a decade, back in 1993, I was shocked to see how much the movement had "grayed" -- which meant that we had failed to find a younger generation to whom to pass the Torch of Liberty.

Fortunately, Don and Sunni have gone a long way toward correcting that failure. To read the ten winning entries below is to feel both relieved and refreshed. Thank you, Knights of the Round Table, and thank you winners, for making far more than my day.

And since you asked, yes, the First Place (child) winner, Rylla Cathryn Smith, is my daughter -- but that doesn't color my feelings about Don and Sunni's contest a bit.

         Well, not much, anyway.
