Letter from Chris Claypoole

In his letter responding to my critique of his essay, John Steinsvold writes in his final paragraph:

It is essential that a balance of power is maintained. These economic bodies will be empowered and controlled by Congress from above. The media will monitor the individual performance of each member via the media from below. If the public is not satisfied with the performance of a member of an economic body, a method must be devised to have him or her replaced. Surely, the balance of power can be maintained.

Anyone who really believes the above is delusional. Of course, his idea about living without money was not particularly rational, either. But how can he believe that a balance of power can be reached among groups that have wildly different levels of potentially applicable force? Congress can bring down the weight of the federal government on anyone who resists, using the various agencies' armed forces, up to and including the military. (Don't think the posse comitatus act will stop them. It won't.) The media will remain (for the most part) the whores of the government at whichever level that media group operates. And if Mr. Steinsvold thinks that the economic bodies will be set up in such a way that the members can be easily removed for cause, he really is living in a dream world. People in power do not relinquish it willingly!

As for his final sentence, his plea sounds too much like "Can't we all just get along?" And don't call me Shirley.
