EDITORIAL MATTERS:

Warren Tilson submitted the winning bid for the hand-corrected manuscript of L. Neil Smith's latest book Ceres. Neil by now should have put it in the mail, and we've already spent some of the cash on groceries. Congratulations Warren, thank you, and thank you Neil!

We've added some new affiliates to the site this week: PetsMart, Netflix, and Tracfone. Let me take a minute to endorse Tracfone. Cellphones are right handy gagets, but the "plans" can drive you batty just trying to figure out, much less use. We had one for road emergencies and for keeping in contact on long road trips, but turns out it only works around where we live. Then I found out about Tracfone. Tracfone is a "pay as you go" service just like our former cellphone, except it works everywhere in the country that a cellphone will operate. You pay for it by buying a card online, or at retailers all over the country—Wal-Mart, and so on. You "install" the time on the card via phone or over the web. Black and White Issues

One of the biggest stories to come out of Washington in recent days involves one of DC's biggest mouths. Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney (D-GA) has made some unflattering headlines before (she was roundly chastised after asserting that the Bush administration knew of the 9/11 attacks in advance but chose to do nothing). She lost her seat in Congress not long afterwards, but ran again and returned to Congress with what appeared to be slightly more dignity and circumspection. Apparently, her change of attitude was even less temporary than was her hiatus from the House.

Searcy County Strikes Again

As I watch my country disintegrate, I am frequently struck by a particular phenomenon. The deterioration is first and most often noticed on a local level. Oh, I certainly agree that our presidential Shrub is an evil moron, no doubt about it. His cronies and advisors aren't stupid, but they are even more evil than he is. All of this is very spectacular, and it is likely to get even more so when we see the coming mushroom clouds over Iran. Despite this, if the average American on the street retained even a tenth of the integrity and courage of our 19th Century ancestors—let alone the 18th Century giants that founded this nation—we could survive three more years of Shrub and Co. hands down.
