EDITORIAL MATTERS:

Issue 429! You know 0.429-inch is the actual size of the famous so-called ".44 Magnum" bullet. When they created the Magnumized version of the old .38 Special they called it by it's true size, as the .357 Magnum. But for some reason when they did the same to the old .44 Special, it became the .44 Magnum instead of the .429 Magnum. Of course, I really did stop expecting consistency from life years ago—honest!—so I don't know why it bugs me.

This Hurricane Season

I don't know if anyone else remembers the exact moment they lost all faith in the government, but I remember losing mine two years ago during Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Not that my faith was all that strong to begin with. By then I had already considered myself a cynical Libertarian. A few years ago a young lady in El Paso County, Texas tried to cover up the death of her infant and was caught out. She was charged with what amounted to negligent homicide of an infant. She admitted to covering up the child's death while being interrogated by the sheriff's deputies. She also asked for an attorney repeatedly, a request which the deputies denied. All of this was videotaped.

The YouTube Debate

Anyone who's ever spent any time on YouTube knows it's the Internet's greatest time-suck yet. Thirty second clips spawn 30 minute sessions as one bumbling weatherman leads to another, till suddenly you realize you've spent the last six hours watching breakdancing babies, teenage girls fighting, and terrible rap songs performed by two dorks who think it's a hoot to bust rhymes about math. If there's ever been an opiate of the masses, YouTube is that opiate. TV only trained us for YouTube. In ten years, we'll wonder how we were ever mindlessly entertained without it.
